Will school weapon detections cause class time delay?

Probably being given to the new young teachers are not ready to go head to head with admin.

Would think many would not want to take risk that they’d be one on duty if an incident happens. Are there police at door of weapon found? Or do English teachers and counselors now need to take mixed martial arts classes?

Counselors, other non-teacher positions like assessment coach and social worker, SOSA, all the administrators, security staff - a ridiculous waste of people's time.

I'd like to hear what the schools with "no delays" are doing so the Westfields and Woodsons can change their approach.

- Students will need to remove backpacks and take out laptops, phones, watches, etc before walking through
- Students will need to remove jewelry before walking through

They were told it will take 25-30 minutes for the entire student body (this is a MS) to enter the building, so he was told they might open the doors earlier. This seems a little crazy to me.

My DC's school requires students to remove laptop, umbrella and 3-ring binder from the backpack. When my DC was passing the weapon detector, DC was told to held the laptop, umbrella and 3-ring binder high above the head. The binder fell down the ground, it took several minutes to sort it out. The teacher at the weapon detector was unhappy. She kept telling kids to remove things from their backpacks and said: "I am not going to help you hold your stuff." I am not blaming her. This may not be her duty on her contract. But FCPS should at least provide some boxes like the ones used at the airport security checkpoint for student to put their stuff when passing the detector.

That’s totally f&ked up, I’m sorry. Holding heavy materials high above your head? They can fall. We need to organize and rise up and fight back. Our kids deserve better.

My DD's friend is short. The staff at the checkpoint called her out from the line and manually checked her backpack because even if she hold her stuff above her head, the detector still get triggered.

Did the SB debate and approve the introduction of these things? I don’t recall hearing anything about them before the short pilot in spring

You'd think a major change like this would be discussed and voted on by the School Board.

But no, they are asleep at the wheel.

SB just rubber stamps whatever dumb idea Reid has.

FCPS should have done a better job in communication. The school email only mentioned a few things to be taken out of the backpack but all kinds of things can make the detector sound, including medal eye glasses case and the metal handle of some backpacks.

We didn't even get an email from Westfield explaining the process they would use this year or how they felt it worked last year. Not shocked but annoyed.

If you don't have this duty then it's bathroom duty, cafeteria duty, etc. later in the day. There are no good options and the extra duties this year are really taking a toll on staff morale.

It seems like teachers are tasked with everything but the time to plan and teach....sad for them and students.

My DW teaches in a MS and she says the same thing about the duties this year.

I don't understand, did they fire the people who did those jobs last year (obviously, the metal detector jobs are new, and absurd).

I wonder how first period teachers feel about multiple students being late every day.
