Sounds like you are having a lovely New Years Day 2026.

Totally. Maybe OP's son doesn't enjoy shopping. And they are currently in FL. Can't exactly go out and try a bunch of boots. And it's a process and an investment, and mom doesn't want to waste money on something a teenage boy may not wear no matter what's good for him. Geesh.

Just don’t complain about all of the inept, infantilized husbands of the world if this is your position!

Have another drink, and may none of your family members disturb you for advice.

OP’s adult son didn’t ask HER first advice, ma’am. She’s asking for advice on how to better insert herself into his life.

OP here. Why are you speaking for me? My son did ask me for advice. He has no idea what kids wear or what is needed.

And why the heck are you so freaking weird?
Is your life this empty that you have to pick on a stranger about something as stupid as whether or not college kids or Maine residents need snow boots?

You need to get out more, have sex more or vacation more. Your behavior is not normal.

I’m PP - I have Blundstones of my own and have worn Docs for a long time - Blundstones are not stiff or uncomfortable (whereas Docs are esp at first), the soles are incredibly light. The leather needs breaking in but what boot doesn’t?

Apart from that didn’t read the thread but there doesn’t need to be drama about OP asking about boots in snowy college climates.

The LL Bean boots!

Love the LL Bean boots, bring back memories of the snowy/muddy New England college days…

I went to college in NH and definitely needed boots. DC went to college in Michigan and she wore boots all winter. P

Blundstones are winter boots, but they are NOT snow boots.

+1. really surprised to see all the responses about Blundstones. I like mine but would never wear them in the snow. My kid in college in NE wears and loves the Ugg snow boots.

I wore those all winter at my Virginia college. Great for snow, rain, mud, whatever!

Does your college student buy all of their own clothing? I have a college student and one headed there next year and I still buy them clothing. Just bought the high school senior a pair of winter boots and lots of warm clothing for christmas because he's headed up to N England next year. And no he doesnt' know how to dress there because he's from the DMV and he's 17.

Is he just starting college in the spring semester? What was he doing this fall?

OP, the summer before dd left for freshman year, I went on her college's parent facebook page and searched 'boots.' The overwhelming recommendation was Blundstones so that's what dd bought. They are perfect for her very cold, rural, snowy campus. I'm not sure where the kids of some of these other posters go to school, but I have been to dd's campus in January and pretty much every kid I see is wearing boots. Sure, the paths are cleared but it is freezing there (real feel 6 degrees right now) and the kids spend plenty of time outdoors, even in the dead of winter. I would suggest you do the same - ask on the parent FB page for your ds' college. Could be Blundies, LL Bean, Mucks. Congrats to your ds and don't listen to the cranks on here - I went to college in the midwest and was wholly unprepared for the weather - I wish I had had you helping me out!

Yes, the campus is one big rolling, ice-covered hill. She wears sorels and a lot more often than she expected.

I also would suggest buying lined khaki pants for students in colder climates during the winter. I suppose lined jeans might work, but ordinary Levis will not be warm enough. Even here in metro DC, we wear lined khaki pants for most of the winter. And have layers. Bean’s “Maine Warden Parka”, hard to find in stores so look online, is great in very cold climates.
