Is he just starting college in the spring semester? What was he doing this fall? |
| OP, the summer before dd left for freshman year, I went on her college's parent facebook page and searched 'boots.' The overwhelming recommendation was Blundstones so that's what dd bought. They are perfect for her very cold, rural, snowy campus. I'm not sure where the kids of some of these other posters go to school, but I have been to dd's campus in January and pretty much every kid I see is wearing boots. Sure, the paths are cleared but it is freezing there (real feel 6 degrees right now) and the kids spend plenty of time outdoors, even in the dead of winter. I would suggest you do the same - ask on the parent FB page for your ds' college. Could be Blundies, LL Bean, Mucks. Congrats to your ds and don't listen to the cranks on here - I went to college in the midwest and was wholly unprepared for the weather - I wish I had had you helping me out! |
| Yes, the campus is one big rolling, ice-covered hill. She wears sorels and a lot more often than she expected. |
Have you heard of early decision? |
I also would suggest buying lined khaki pants for students in colder climates during the winter. I suppose lined jeans might work, but ordinary Levis will not be warm enough. Even here in metro DC, we wear lined khaki pants for most of the winter. And have layers. Bean’s “Maine Warden Parka”, hard to find in stores so look online, is great in very cold climates. |
| Did the same poster start the other boots thread?? |
| Title of thread made me think of DS who is first year at a SEC school. He also asked for boots for Christmas! |
I would suggest not buying lined pants. You will be fine with regular clothes. |
Check out Redbacks, they're like Blundstones but better. More aggressive sole for traction and more comfortable as well. |

I am ordering boots for freshman son in PA. They will get hammered this weekend. It is a small school and campus.
I told him - for at least the fourth time since September - to ask peers/upperclassmen what tey like and wear. hHe asked for boots that don’t even cover the ankle. Should I just get them? Or push for higher coverage? |
| omg |
| My DS went from CA to NYC, wears North Face Larimer. He’s happy with them. Didn’t like the design of Blundstones. |
|
Yes. And he never wore them at home. We were moving him in this weekend and he came down in boots. I was shocked—lots of snow though
Sperry duck boots. |
| Laughing because just saw two college age kids leavinf Panera..wearing shorts. Girl had a lightweight winter jacket, boy had a long sleeve T shirt. It's 25 degrees right now. |
This. We are from New England and DC just graduated from a northern New England university. They wore their LL Bean duck boots with every other kid there. I think the new brands are for those from out of the area. You can sub in Sorels (who make great warm boots to use when the snow is frozen), but these fancy brands are not necessary. |
