How good is Maret?

Seriously? That is way small. I do know a significant number of families left for 9th grade which is unheard of at other area schools which says a lot.

As the previous poster confirmed, the classes are 80-85. If you don’t believe it, call the school.

It is typical for a number of families to change schools before high school but Maret had an especially large number leave this year so while the classes are typically 80-85 in the Upper School, it wouldn't surprise me if the freshman class was an unusually small one.

But it’s not. While students always change schools in 9th grade, there are also far more applicants for the spots than there are kids departing. As the previous post noted, they’re accepting around 1 in 8 applications (and probably less specifically for 9th grade) so they have no problem filling classes.

This is correct.

Not to mention, the school has 97% student retention (and a very eager waitlist).

I wish that was the case. They don’t really consider an iq test in the admission process.

Being White does not make it harder to get in to Maret and the underlying racism of that way of thinking is an issue. The school is diverse and especially for Ind. schools.

I don’t think it’s that socio economically diverse. The school is very careful selecting prospective families with very high potential for donations.

I'm the poster you're responding to and I agree that this is traditionally true. However, there are issues that kept that from being true for this year's freshman class. A lot of families left and they had trouble filling the class from the wait list. It's only one year so it's not exactly a trend and I imagine that Maret's admissions will figure out a way to correct their yield for next year.

Is there any particular reason why families left ?

This is simply untrue. The 9th grade class is very small this year and people left for a reason.

The HOS sent an email about it this summer. It's been discussed on this board before but I believe that the posts have been deleted.

I always wonder about this. Is this due to the students/education really being strong or there are lots of legacy kids? If a school only admits kids whose parents went to ivies, there is no doubt there will be more ivy admissions, no?

This is the case at most schools- ivies and top colleges are populated with kids with hooks. Legacies, athletes, musicians, actors, etc.
