How good is Maret?

Apparently current freshman class is 68. My kid has a friend in the class and was shocked to hear how small. It wasn’t one we considered but tbh, that is very small for high school and my kid would not have been happy.

+1. I think someone at Maret is blackmailing the DCUM moderators.

I love to get a steaming cup of hot tea and read these private school threads with the specific trolls. Pure entertainment.

I thought the class size was typically around 80 or 85?

Having gone through high school admissions twice now, Maret is considered to be one of the MOST selective schools because of it's small size. Almost everyone I know from both of my children's classes who applied to a Big 3 also applied to Maret. Maret just doesn't have that many spots available to not be selective.

That being said, selective is different from most rigorous. It is intentionally not like the Big 3 with tons of homework. I know plenty of parents with kids at a Big 3 who didn't get into Maret (again it's just numbers!) and it was their first choice because of the school's philosophy. I have a kid at a Big 3 who often wonders if Maret would have been better. There are pros/cons of each approach.

We applied in K to Maret, Sidwell and BVR. Maret was our least favorite of the 3 and the only one our kid was not accepted at. It seems to me that at least in K it’s the most selective one.

Isn’t there a demographic cliff with the class of 2029?

Maret angered the Gods and has been forever cursed that any action it takes related to athletic fields will cause great anger to the surrounding community.

They will take any kid who can play football. It’s a little weird at this point, but the football coach seems to call the shots with admissions and transfers.

It’s long been known for being very difficult to get into because it is so small. College placement has been very strong, particularly with the last few classes, but as PPs have mentioned it is known for being less academically rigorous than some of its peers. How we’ve seen this play out is less homework than some of the peer schools and the kids do not seem to be overly competitive with each other

Our experience has been that we have really liked the community, particularly the parents, but I am unimpressed with the new head of school and the changes in the past couple of years. It has been mostly great for my child, but I am also relieved to be leaving the community soon because my child is graduating. I’m actually very surprised that there has not been an announcement about a search for a new head of school.

I just wanted to add that the college placement is a bit misleading since many kids have legacy admissions. But this is not something specific to Maret, but it applies to many private schools in the area.

Me too! Love it. Sometimes I troll myself just to see how the thread evolves.

Laughably incorrect and easily verifiable. All high school grades are around 80-85

The truth is that the school campus is way smaller than other schools and that is inconveniente (even if you consider the new field that very few kids will be able to use, and only in high schools).

Couldn’t agree more. Not sure why people are so defensive about the HOS.
