I can't distinguish sarcasm from idiocy on dcum. Poe's law is real. |
| hi OP, yes, I get a weird reaction in my head too. |
|
I am sensitive to MSG for sure. I can definitely tolerate some amount of it but will get a horrible migraine when it’s one of the top ingredients. Learned that the hard way with things like breakfast sausage and canned broth.
I can only recall one time where I had any sort of reaction after eating Chinese food. I was up in the middle of the night feeling anxious and nauseous. Not even sure that was from MSG since it was different from my usual reaction. Also, two things: MSG is neurotoxic and a sensitivity is not an allergy. |
Can someone do a sarcasm check on this for me? |
I have already replied to this on p1. - Baja Fresh uses (or used to use) tons of MSG - Campbell’s Soup adds it to most canned soup - Salad bars have been known to use MSG dissolved in water as a spray to keep lettuce fresh longer. No one is arguing MSG as an ingredient is exclusive to Asian cuisine. Regardless of the style of food, it still gives me unpleasant symptoms. |
DP. Why would you think she was being sarcastic? Fact is: glutamate is a key excitatory neurotransmitter. Look it up. |
Can someone also do a parody check on this post. It's hard to distinguish the genuine posts from those making fun of them. |
Technically, that's true, which is, of course, the best kind of true... Even if it doesn't mean what you think it means... |
| No. I crave that flavor, though. |
I don't detect sarcasm, just someone who believes MSG can be one of the main ingredients in sausage. |
Curiously, as you point out, MSG occurs naturally in ketchup and has been added to improve flavor. Are ketchup headaches a thing? https://www.foodrepublic.com/2016/08/22/is-there-msg-in-tomatoes/ https://www.webmd.com/diet/foods-high-in-msg |

Question for OP- what do you usually order when you get a reaction?
Maybe its Bacillus cereus you are experiencing… https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7913059/ |
yup. |
Same. And no it's not racist. I'm literally of Chinese descent. Some people actually have a really bad reaction to added msg. |
Thx! I will check it out. I’m the op. With some foods (like Campbell’s soup), I have found it right on the label after a reaction. One of the strongest reactions came from Pho places; I used to love Pho soup; especially the one place on Wilson Blvd near Courthouse metro (was it called Pho 75 maybe?). Anyway - the Pho there is delicious, for those who experience no reaction. I highly recommend it (if it’s still around). Also, I used to add the sprouts and sweet basil on the side (many people opted not to) and usually added the brown sauce on the tables; I suspect the sauce only added more MSG, but there is no way for me to be sure of that. The old Courthouse / Clarendon Baja Fresh was another place which caused me severe reactions. Learned to avoid both (along with avoiding Campbells soup and most packaged Ramen). |
