Latin PCS

How do you supplement writing? My kid is very weak in writing, and I would love ideas.

My child is in 4th going to 2nd Street next year. Child struggles with writing. We did zoom tutoring using IEW (Institute for Excellence in Writing) Structure and Style program and it has been a game changer. It is heavily scaffolded for struggling writers. There are some people that do this through outschool but there are also independent tutors that use this program. We plan to continue next year.

Class size is 90-95 per grade

Love it when a statistics warrior comes on here with no real facts!!

+100. Not sure how many in class of 2025 but definitely less than 100. 5 Ivies seems pretty impressive for a citywide lottery school. And lots of kids are deciding on financial aid so perhaps more are getting in but can't attend. But regardless, the kids graduating from Latin are kind, compassionate, thoughtful human beings which is way more important than what college one attends.

The few Latin kids getting into T10 schools would have done fine at any school. There are outliers everywhere. Parents are certainly supplementing all the time.

All Latin kids are "kind, compassionate, thoughtful human beings"? You realize that Latin is a 100% lottery school, right?

The point is that Latin is just not that good. Here are some stats on Latin 2nd St:

-25% never take an AP exam
-43% never pass a single AP exam
-42% are not proficient in reading
-11% do not graduate

I'm sorry you have a terrible waitlist number for Latin.

I do hope families looking at Latin will seek out info from existing families, school tours/conversations, and shadow days.

We are a family matched with Latin and will likely enroll. We have found really positive feedback from real families with kids at the school and the school reached out about shadow days. Hard to tour a building that isn’t finished.

You do know that college decisions are not done until May 1 right? And that not every kid/family wants their decision on the internet? Just making sure…..

If you have specific questions, the Latin parents are more than happy to respond. Basis and Latin are completely different- if you are focused on academics only - basis is your answer. If you want a more holistic classical education - with less stress for your child - Latin makes more sense. Neither focus on sports. Both operate like private schools.

Didn’t list Latin at all—not with those numbers.

Wow, those numbers are not good, esp the 43% not passing a single AP exam.

Getting a 3 is not hard, especially with the low risk population at Latin.

That would be a red flag to me.

And almost half not reading at grade level in addition to not passing AP above.

Don’t do it. Latin is racist and xenophobic, and so many entitled brats! I graduated two years ago. I didn’t realize how a weird place it was until I got to college and talked about my experiences with friends. It was mistake to go there. Be careful.

Last poster--Can you say a little more? As a parent who is seriously considering this option I would like to know more. Was it teachers, curriculum, other students, parents?

This is an interesting comment. We are also considering Latin and I’ve spoken to many real black families (we are also black) and no one has spoken about the school in this way.
