The PP said Roanoke wasn’t a national university and that graduates should expect to work in Martinsville or for Advance Auto after graduation. Do the 111 kids from MD and 76 from NJ all move to Martinsville? |
Why yes, there is a difference. No offense to Roanoke, but it is not in the same league as W&L. |
|
This is a money question and only the original poster can answer it.
I would think there has to be another option between the two schools were the OP can get some merit. |
|
I think your kid could have a great time at Roanoke OP, but they might find the fellow students to be a bit unstimulating. Up to them if they can handle that.
|
They're also both in the ODAC (then again, both UNC and FSU are in the ACC, and one is clearly better than the other). If my kid got into both, I'd definitely lean hard into W&L. It's a phenomenal school -- top tier among SLACs. Roanoke is an OK school. |
Agree. Roanoke is spending big bucks on rebranding and trying to appeal to students with new football team, food trucks, social media etc. Wish them the best but they are largely undifferentiated among the ODAC schools other than WLU. |
| We recently toured Roanoke. The negative posters on this thread should go see it. It’s a beautiful campus with a charming little downtown area within walking distance. Picture perfect mountains make for stunning scenery. Students were friendly and seemed happy. Sporty vibe. Why do more DC kids not at least tour this hidden gem? |
| I was there today for admitted students day and pretty underwhelmed. A quarter of the school is in the Greek system btw, the staff were pretty unenthused, and the engineering rep didn't even show up at the "fair" for majors. We had to talk to the physics guy. The QR code on the business flyer was non-functional. We didn't stay for the campus tour. The whole vibe was very "come here, or don't, who cares." |
How was the staff unenthusiastic and what were you expecting? |
|
They were nice, but they gave their power point presenations and that was it. We were at tables eating lunch. There were only about 30 families. No staff came around to the tables and just said, hey, thanks for coming. The presenters just kind of dropped names of people and assured us about 50 times, I kid you not, that they could find a job with the alumni network. No pics really showing students doing much. One senior read an essay that was flat.
I was at ODU last weekend and just the session we had with the assistant dean for engineering on what we could expect blew Roanoke out of the water. The speakers and the professionalism of the staff hosting the event made an effort to get us excited about the school. Today, the engineering guy was "running late" today and we had a 4 hour drive home so that was really, really lame. And my DS was interested in business as a minor. The lady was baffled that their free trial to their QR code on the flyer had expired. Didn't offer to answer questions about anything, just said, oh, our bad, guess we should get that looked at. At the price they are charging, for an already admitted student, it was a let down. |
We had a COMPLETELY different experience -- though to be fair, my kid is not interested in engineering. My DC is considering, and we really liked it! |
+1 |
What did your DC like about Roanoke? |
It's GORGEOUS. Friendly. Homey. We felt like everyone we spoke to really wanted to be there. My kid likes the mountains, and they're there for the taking. |
| Always Roanoke. Great school. |
