Great Over 55 community?

I have multiple friends with parents who live in Laguna Woods (Orange County, CA). They have all found community, expanded on their hobbies, and really enjoyed it.

I wish the east coast had places like that. (I am not a Florida fan).

Haven’t considered these before - are home costs higher than in non-communities? Or is it just that the monthly fees are quite high?

Depends on where you live and the amenities they offer. My aunt and uncle were in a 55+ on Long Island in NY. The property taxes were much lower because there were no local schools to fund. There was a community fee, but it wasn’t huge. The amenities were limited though. It was a gated community, had a pool and a community building, minimal programming. It worked until they were in their 80s and needed more care.

Also, there has to be enough residents to pay-into the expense for all the amenities.

We got a place in Del Webb, Ponte Vedra FL. There are 2,000 homes. The amenities are too many to list. It is gated and guarded and beautifully maintained with reasonable HOA ($200/mo). It is not a golf community but we did not want that. The only downside is the rate of growth in this area is robust but that is mostly west of us (farther from the beach). Great medical care although we’re not big fans of Mayo. JAX airport is a beautiful airport, nice lounge, but not a great menu of direct flights. Afterall, we think God travels through Atlanta or Charlotte.

We are in a 55+ and are the most active we’ve been in our life. Bike on beach or amazing nature trails (it’s flat), state of the art gym, indoor, and outdoor pool, golf, tennis, pickleball and on and on.

The point of this thread is for people to share the names of places they like. It is just their preference.

The thread becomes useless when you diss what's mentioned.

Not for me. Cliques, gossip, forced socializing, no other generations. And Florida? Absolutely not ever.

Said by someone who probably does not live alone, and perhaps still has a job and children nearby.

You may reach a point in life when readymade friends and easy access activities is needed and welcomed.

Keep the suggestions coming. Places, other than Florida, are what's hard to find. Larger places and a range of price points -- keep those suggestions coming.

I posted earlier about my mom’s place in Amherst, NY. It’s called Asbury Point. $200,000.00 but in for a one bedroom condo.

We're also looking for places that aren't either Florida or Arizona.
