Renewing passport for minor -- by appointment only?

Anonymous
Looking at the instructions at state.gov, it looks like I have to appear in person to renew my child's passport. And I do this at a post office, and I have to make an appointment between 10 and 3 on a weekday.

Does my child have to appear with me?
Are there any places that have hours that are conducive to the actual hours of people who work and children who attend school?

Anyone who has done this recently want to give me tips on how to do this so we don't disrupt our entire day to pull it off?

It is hell on Earth...thanks State Department!

If you can wait several weeks for an appointment then that is the best option. If not, then there are a few walk in places (DC, Dunn Loring, Fredericksburg). The further out you go the less likely the line will be super long. I waited 6 hours at Dunn Loring and I arrived when they opened.

If you use the post office you must go during their hours. However, the US Passport office sometimes offers special hours like Saturdays during the busy season (which just passed). Check the website for the US Passport office and see if their hours are more suitable. You child will probably have to take a new passport picture if he or she has changed since the first one was taken. Be prepared for it to be a multi-step process. If your haven't already gotten the other parent's permission they might need to appear as well. This can get complicated if you are divorced or not married but since it is a renewal hopefully it won't be as daunting as a first time passport. Again check the website for more information and do a quick google search for renewing a child's passport.

Three kids, all with passports renewed multiple times. There hasn't been an easy way to do it -- we appear in person with our child, usually during work and/or school hours each time. It helps to get an appointment at a post office and to have all of your documents in order when you arrive.

One time (when DH was working in another city) we got a notarized document that allowed me to get a kid's passport without him present so that might be a possibility but that was a while ago.

I just did my son's passport. I had to go to the passport office downtown because we were on a time crunch, but I had my husband sign and notarize the form to let me do it myself.

Look for a post office with Saturday hours -- those appointments fill up fast.

Thanks, all!

Which post offices have Saturday hours? We are in DC.

And can I go without my child? If I can do that, I can make an appointment and go on my lunch break.

No, child and both parents must be present. If one parent can't be there a form must be notarized.

Here are the directions from the state.gov website. They are really clear so not sure why you are having so much trouble figuring this out.

The post office near Montgomery Mall has hours during the week between 10 and 4 and 9 - 2 pm on Saturday. Appointment only. Easy place for parking.

State's website says they don't have Saturday hours. Do you have info otherwise? Should I call them to ask?
