Looking at the instructions at state.gov, it looks like I have to appear in person to renew my child's passport. And I do this at a post office, and I have to make an appointment between 10 and 3 on a weekday. Does my child have to appear with me? Are there any places that have hours that are conducive to the actual hours of people who work and children who attend school? Anyone who has done this recently want to give me tips on how to do this so we don't disrupt our entire day to pull it off?
If you use the post office you must go during their hours. However, the US Passport office sometimes offers special hours like Saturdays during the busy season (which just passed). Check the website for the US Passport office and see if their hours are more suitable. You child will probably have to take a new passport picture if he or she has changed since the first one was taken. Be prepared for it to be a multi-step process. If your haven't already gotten the other parent's permission they might need to appear as well. This can get complicated if you are divorced or not married but since it is a renewal hopefully it won't be as daunting as a first time passport. Again check the website for more information and do a quick google search for renewing a child's passport.
