You're right, sorry, should have clarified. Wilson does have a significant population of under-prepared students, and GDS does not have that; why would they? However, within the sizable segment of well-prepared kids at Wilson, you would find the same range of skills/talents/abilities as at GDS or another selective private school. (Well-prepared, in other words, doesn't mean super smart, super ambitious, or super hard-working at either type of school.) The 2 groups come largely from hyper-educated NW DC families, but the Wilson parents either can't or choose not to pay GDS tuition (e.g., they're nonprofit or federal lawyers instead of partners at firms), or are committed to public school, or their children want a bigger pond. Whether Wilson gives these well-prepared children an education equal to GDS or other NW private schools is a different question. |

I've never heard such a self-congratulatory group as GDS administrators and parents. Sidwell is nothing by comparison.

| When are they going to build the apartment/condo tower next to Janney? Didn't DC reinforce the new library so that several more stories of mixed-use/residences can be built on top? Then new families and their kids won't even have to cross the street to reach Janney. The developer can simply put in a back door that leads to the playground. |

They refuse to build more than the minimum affordable housing required by law because they say to build more would mean they couldn't hold down tuition as much for their students. Don't expect more than token increases of ethnic and SES diversity. Do expect more white affluent residents.

And don't even expect that. There was an article in the paper recently that suggested that those taking advantage of "affordable housing"DC included not so much those onfixed incomes, or even cops and firefighters, but rather young professionals who are early in their careers and who are not making big salaries (yet). |

To build a big PUD development, isn't GDS supposed to provide community benefits and amenities over and above what zoning laws and regulations require? So what are the touted "amenities" -- the proposed GDS Spanish Steps or perhaps the school's expanded presence itself?! |

Those are the major ones. They also said they would make their theatre available sometime to local schools. Just what Janney, Deal, and Wilson are dying for after their major renovations, occasional access to a private school's theatre.
