How can we make DC streets bicycle and pedestrian-only?

But trucks, busses, cars and motorcycles ruin it for us residents.

DC is geographically tiny, so why not make our streets pedestrian and bicycles- only?

A moderate Democrat here. This post simply shows how completely out of touch some people are. Sidewalks were literally built for pedestrians, and see few sidewalks being overwhelmed with pedestrians.

I think you missed the point entirely.

In particular, you fail to understand pollution.

Climate-crisis aside, DCs poor air quality comes from cars, trucks, and non-electric buses (why are those even allowed in DC?)

But they is not the only pollution diminishing quality of life for us. Noise pollution is every bit of an issue. And it’s horrible!

Imagine what could be. Imagine a better future for DC and the entire diversity of its residents.

No one needs a car in the city. It’s a luxury that is leading to rampant crime. We are all better off without cars.

Yes, let's take away anything people might steal. Perhaps we should all be issued grey jumpsuits to wear as well?

And uh the number of bikes stolen every year is many times the number of cars stolen

Not anymore. There were 6,000 cars stolen in DC in 2023.

I was not aware of this, is it common knowledge?

How can we make DC bike-only a legislative priority, and maybe a reality, in 2024 ?

You just want to kill the remaining businesses in DC? Many restaurants are complaining that the lack of parking is taking away from their businesses. Uber is making traffic worse and I'm not biking to a restaurant at night.

Please go away with this nonsense.

Please take a trip to Paris and see a city that has been transformed by shrinking the space for vehicle traffic. Its economy seems to be doing just fine, by the way.

This cracks me up. Paris is far more dense than DC with a completely different mindset about cars and transportation. You can’t simply “cut and paste” what they do in Paris and expect it to work here.

Like it or not, DC is a car-dependent city in a car-dependent region in a car-dependent country.

If DC actually banned cars, trucks, and buses en masse, it would wither even further on the vine.

Paris was an auto-dependent city in the post war era and it is leadership over the ensuing decades that led to this different mindset. Same with Amsterdam and every other city. There is no reason we cannot have this type of lifestyle and infrastructure in the US if the leadership leads. Yes, I get it, the Baby Boomers were told over their lives that a car = open road and American freedom. In fact the opposite is true. Cars are more expensive, take up more space and are more polluting. They also lead to a more sedentary lifestyle.

What is true is that DDOT posts RFPs for organizations to provide cylcing safety and 'learn to ride' sessions for the public. WABA is one of several groups that apply for the grants and sometimes wins them. There is no co-mingling of moneies used for lobbying. That would be illegal. So if someone has proof of that, they should turn it over to the authorities. Otherwise, it is just fake bluster.

How do expect all the people who work in DC but don't live in DC to get to work? Bike? Really?

Lived in manassas for a bit. Can confirm, taking the VRE did take a lot more time (probably about 1.5x) but god was it so much better to be able to sit on a train and read a book listening to music or catch up on work emails than stuck in i66 gridlock with everyone pissed off.

Hey, let's make it HARDER for employees to get downtown. Yes, that will bring folks back.

Metro? Bus? And yes, a lot of people bike. Maybe you aren't aware of it because you just don't see it, but yes, there are a lot of people who bike in using the trails and bike lanes that exist.

Bus-only lanes will make it EASIER for employees to get downtown.
