Is Shakespeare not taught in DCPS?

This may come as a surprise for you, the threat to Shakespeare is coming from the left these days. He's not woke enough, have you even read the Cliff's Notes on The Taming of The Shrew? That's just pure, unadulterated patriarchy. Shakespeare is also white, so thats a good enough reason to replace him with an insipid novel about some gender fluid adolescents. Those white, Christian, cis-gendered high school students, we need to make fun of them, right?

This is so precious. I've never read the Cliff Notes for The Taming of the Shrew. I read the original in high school. It's one of my favorites. It's also a comedy. And yes, Petruchio is an awful male chauvinist that we love to hate.

Dude even when it was new it was meant to be about gender relations? This thread is so tired.

You read the original? I doesn’t look like you know what original means, that would refer to the original manuscript. What other “originals” did you read in high school?

Oooooh it just tears you up that other groups are getting a seat at the table and we all just don’t focus on white men.

No, it doesn’t tear me at all, on the contrary. I just don’t like the identity politics spilling into the English literature class.

Well, also, Taming of the Shrew was one of Shakespeare's early plays. It was never his most popular, and audiences even then seemed somewhat uncomfortable with it. Fletcher's The Women's Prize was written less than 50 years later as a continuation of the play where Petruchio gets what's coming to him, and was VERY popular.

TOTS gets a lot of love not because it's amazing, but simply because it's Shakespeare, and also because it was the basis for the amazing 1999 teen romance 10 Things I Hate About You.

...I take it you either didn't go to college or if you did, English Lit classes weren't mandatory. You learned absolutely nothing about literary criticism, bc that's pretty much all it is.

What other things do you suggest that I use? Unless there’s something better, I’ll stick to pedantries.

You need to write more clearly. I didn’t understand what your point was, unless all you wanted to say was that I don’t understand literary criticism. What is all there is? Nouns instead of pronouns = clear sentences.

it definitely is fun to pretend not to understand when you don't have a better argument. i can guess at what you consider to be identity politics, and yeah, that's what most current lit crit is. so, you are bad and also wrong.

Excellent ideas, I’ll put your advice to good use. Unfortunately there is no time for classes, I’ll have to manage with what I have.

Again, so precious. I didn't say I read the First Folio. But it was unabridged.
