Who cares about SOLs? Certainly not this parent, and certainly not most students. They mean nothing.

Sorry you feel that way. Do you care about SATs or anything else? Should we talk about those?

Most of the kids don't care about the SOLs since they have no effect on anything (college entrance, grade in the course, etc.). All they have to do is get a pass to get the verified credit. For most kids, that's easy to do and who cares about the exact score. By high school the kids are pretty sick of the whole deal and just plow through them. Was the difference in scores between those schools all that significant? Probably not.

Why people obsess over these scores is beyond me.

One of my kids went to Marshall and I was back there last year. The first thing I saw upon entering the doors was a big display about the school's SOL scores. Some friends tell us they feel the school is too focused now on SOLs and driving up the school's ratings compared to Madison and McLean (apart from SOLs, Marshall is still not as highly rated), but I'm sure it makes others happy to know Marshall will get another very high Great Schools rating.

I wonder if the lower Math scores at McLean and Oakton reflect more kids taking advanced math courses at the middle school level. The math and other SOLs at Longfellow and Carson MS are consistently higher than at Kilmer, the primary Marshall middle school feeder.

This. Again, they mean nothing to the kids and some of them don't even try. We never even talked to our kids about them and never saw their scores. And they all went to top colleges.

SOLs are at the bottom of the list of items to consider when evaluating a high school.

Competition is good, I for one would like to see McLean get their ass in gear and work on their math scores.

Maybe you should go over there and see exactly why the scores are lower and also get the colleges and parents to care about the SOL scores . . . if this really matters so much to you.

Hurrah - kids in Fairfax can read! It's the thinking part they seem to stumble over.

You think If I told our principal that she would do something?

My other kids went to McLean and their math teachers were just as good as the ones at Marshall. We really had no complaints, and our DC who just graduated is getting college credit based on his math AP scores. That's more important to me than the SOLs.

This falls under who the frick cares? I can't be the only one sick of this my high school is better than your high school b.s. Why does it matter which schools is ranked higher, by which flawed rating system? High schools don't graduate and go on to college, kids do. All I care about is whether mine are learning and being challenged which can happen at any high school in FCPS.

McLean and Oakton have "issues" in math because most of students take one or two of the SOL math tests in MS. The ones that are left are the ones that have trouble with math.
