This falls under who the frick cares? I can't be the only one sick of this my high school is better than your high school b.s. Why does it matter which schools is ranked higher, by which flawed rating system? High schools don't graduate and go on to college, kids do. All I care about is whether mine are learning and being challenged which can happen at any high school in FCPS.

Apparently everyone but you cares. Take a chill pill. Asians care, are you not asian?

Actually, of the seven high schools mentioned in the title of this thread, Marshall is the only one that has seen a decrease in the percentage of Asian students over the past five years. Maybe they care more about SAT scores, AP courses, or other ratings?

Actually asians have increased at Marshall

McLean, Langley, Madison, Oakton, Woodson are flat

A five-year comparison is more relevant than a two-year comparison.

Most of the kids don't care about the SOLs since they have no effect on anything (college entrance, grade in the course, etc.). All they have to do is get a pass to get the verified credit. For most kids, that's easy to do and who cares about the exact score. By high school the kids are pretty sick of the whole deal and just plow through them. Was the difference in scores between those schools all that significant? Probably not.

Why people obsess over these scores is beyond me.

This. Again, they mean nothing to the kids and some of them don't even try. We never even talked to our kids about them and never saw their scores. And they all went to top colleges.

SOLs are at the bottom of the list of items to consider when evaluating a high school.

I don't quite follow you

There are three HS SOL math tests: Algebra I, Geometry and Algebra II. Most kids at McLean have already taken one or two of the three in MS. The students that are left are the ones that have more problems in math.

Anecdotally, many of the ones having problems in math at Langley are frequently put in private.

A sad commentary on this area.

Why all the hate on George Mason High School?

Too bad Marshall has the lowest SATs for years (including TJ) vs. Langley, McLean, Woodson, Madison and Oakton. I know some schools don't require SATs any longer, but I don't think there's a college or university on the planet that cares about a student's SOL scores.

Nothing personal, it's just no one takes their rankings seriously because they are a statistical anomaly.

Kudos for your school OP! I am sure it is gratifying to see a school defying the SES odds a bit!

To PPs who are preumably from the other listed schools with more "impressive" SAT stats and looking to stomp on OP's pride in her school: you suck. If you are so happy and confident in your choices why the need to tear others down?

- no dog in this fight as a MCPS family

And yet here you are on the VA schools forum? Haha. The Marshall posters are obnoxious and don't celebrate any school "defying the SES odds" except Marshall.

And I agree most people could care less about SOLs.

Too bad kids don't get into colleges based on the average SAT scores at their high schools. That would be a big boost to kids at Langley, McLean, Woodson, et. al. whose scores are so-so. My GCM kid had a near perfect score so school averages really mean nothing to us.

Good point, though to be fair there are more kids with so-so SAT scores at Marshall than at the other schools mentioned.

I think over time Marshall's scores will increase due to the demographic shift around Tysons. Once a couple of the new grocery stores get built, it may also have more "hometown pride" than it does now where it pulls more from the Non-FC, Non-McLean, Non-Vienna area.

- PP you replied to. House-hunting in VA. All the bashing of OP feels a lot like an older sibling taunting a younger one who's proud of an accomplishment by saying "oh yeah, well i know you to x! and you don't even know Y!" believe me, OP is not the one who is coming across as obnoxious.

I've been following DCUM for years and the Marshall posters are the most insufferable touts on the forum. This thread is just the latest example. I'm sorry, but you are, at best, clueless.
