I don't quite follow you

There are three HS SOL math tests: Algebra I, Geometry and Algebra II. Most kids at McLean have already taken one or two of the three in MS. The students that are left are the ones that have more problems in math.

Anecdotally, many of the ones having problems in math at Langley are frequently put in private.

There are plenty of private schools in the area that cater to the child that is not up to snuff.

This falls under who the frick cares? I can't be the only one sick of this my high school is better than your high school b.s. Why does it matter which schools is ranked higher, by which flawed rating system? High schools don't graduate and go on to college, kids do. All I care about is whether mine are learning and being challenged which can happen at any high school in FCPS.

Apparently everyone but you cares. Take a chill pill. Asians care, are you not asian?

Most of the kids don't care about the SOLs since they have no effect on anything (college entrance, grade in the course, etc.). All they have to do is get a pass to get the verified credit. For most kids, that's easy to do and who cares about the exact score. By high school the kids are pretty sick of the whole deal and just plow through them. Was the difference in scores between those schools all that significant? Probably not.

Why people obsess over these scores is beyond me.

I guess that means that the Marshall kids are more self-motivated. Good for you, Marshall kids!

How can we help spread the Marshall miracle?

Be careful what you ask for. Some parents there are not happy with the focus on SOLs compared to other schools and the change in culture to a ratings-obsessed school.

Actually, of the seven high schools mentioned in the title of this thread, Marshall is the only one that has seen a decrease in the percentage of Asian students over the past five years. Maybe they care more about SAT scores, AP courses, or other ratings?

Interesting that you did not think to mention the school system at the very top, Falls Church City:

George Mason High School is not as good as Langley, McLean, or Yorktown and never will be.

Maybe the poster was focusing on larger systems or being polite and trying not to draw attention to the fact that FCCPS scores are a legacy of FCC's past decision to redraw its borders to exclude minority and lower-income residents. That should be a source of shame, not bragging rights.

Plenty of racist legacy issues in Fairfax and Arlington too. Private neighborhood swimming pools, anyone?

FCC does not have a school system and should not be allowed to be ranked among real school systems. They are a tiny enclave that is a 2 square foot mile blip on the map, and they should only be allowed to compare themselves to "systems" of their size.
