Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS)
Those math and science offering are sad as is the lack of STEM offerings, but at least they have Pastry Arts. Compare that sheet to https://insys.fcps.edu/CourseCatOnline/coursegroup/520/nocourselist/0/0/0/1;title=coursegroup and then you don't have to wonder why people with kids who want to go to college avoid the school |
Seems like the academic offerings at Mount Vernon would be perfectly acceptable for most college-bound kids? Does everything have to be geared to the handful of math/science whizzes who probably should be at TJ but got turned down and ended up at their neighborhood school? |
A handful? Around 20% of FCPS 7th graders are taking Algebra 1. Mt Vernon offers nothing for them as seniors |
This is false. You simply have a particular math sequence in mind you're not seeing at Mt. Vernon. Doesn't mean they can't take math/science electives. |
| Did they provide any useful information during today's community meeting? |
+1 Good grief. But still - must be "racism!!!" DP |
You could go to WSHS and take Nutrition and Wellness, Film Study, or Sports Leadership, none of which sound more rigorous (just less tasty) than a culinary elective. |
Didn’t even know they were having a community meeting. Was it one of the virtual ones? I gotta imagine those are going to be a complete mess logistically. |
Yes. Around 100 people, small breakout rooms. It was a good opportunity to explain all the challenges kids will have if they mess with boundaries. Many people mentioned property values, buying houses to be in a particular school, etc. Please sign up for other meetings and let them know your thoughts. They collect questions and concerns. They will be (I think) publicly available. |
Thank you. I went to a couple in person meetings, and it was quite clear that the vast majority of residents and families opposed boundary changes. I’ve heard outcry over the mere prospect of changes, but the board has not seen a fraction of what will come when they announce the maps. |
There was a community meeting this week? At which school? |
It was the first in a series of virtual online meetings. They will continue into February. |
| How can the public attend the Boundary Review Advisory Committee meetings? |
You can also take STEM electives not offered at Mt Vernon |
The committee is too huge. The committee is the public. |
