Well, it is. Why shouldn't it be? Teachers work in the same school their own children attend, why shouldn't someone be able to sub?

Subs aren't held to the same standards for professionalism and confidentiality as regular teachers. I'm a classroom teacher and I've had parents sub in my room. One was caught snooping in my filing cabinet (no reason to look in there), and others have been heard to gossip about the students and staff at neighborhood parties based on what they saw in the classroom and snippets of conversations that they heard while being in the teacher's lounge or office.

I'm also a teacher and haven't run into anything like this. If we didn't accept parents as substitutes I think we would end up with a shortage of subs.

Absolutely true and as a parent I've observed this kind of behavior from parents who sub. But without them, there simply wouldn't be enough subs. So there's almost no right answer.

FCPS has a lot of subs. There are over 100 schools. Parents who sub should pick one that their kids don't go to.

Teacher here and my elementary school does not allow parents of current students to sub in the school for many of the reasons listed above.

I'm pretty sure our school has a rule that parent subs can't sub in their own children's classrooms.

I'm a teacher and former sub who subbed in my kids' school. No issues. Guess it depends on the school.

Not only does my school use many parent subs, they have hired many of those parents to fill staff vacancies. It has happened a lot over my 20+ years.

+1. Same reason at our school.

The subs I've come in contact with this year have been absolutely awful. I wish we had parents that subbed. I can't tell you the amount of subs I've seen this year that don't speak enough English to communicate with the students, ones who sit at a desk all day and don't even bother to read plans, ones who scream at the kids the second they walk in the door. It's been atrocious. Has FCPS relaxed the qualifications? I'm afraid to take leave anymore.
