Anyone else ever have a "vacation from hell" ?

ISO similar stories of "vacations from hell," if only to remind me that it sometimes happens that you spend money and time, only to have a truly bad experience!

We just returned from 1 week at a national park for a family reunion in the West. The flights were not cheap to that area because we had to go to a small airport, and then rent an SUV to drive. We rented what looked like a great log home (not cheap), but it turned out to be not entirely clean even through we rented through Vacasa which I think of as a good place.

Four of the five members of our family got pretty sick while there. I don't necessarily think it had anything to do with the cleanliness home, but rather than one of us left DC with a cold and it seemed to get worse as the next person caught it. We were all miserable!

We've been back in DC for 4 days and we are all still sick. My DH and I have been going to work, but have been unproductive and miserable. The kids are home miserable with the babysitter.

I'm sure we'll all feel fine in a few days and will remember the trip more favorably. But after spending $5000 and 1 week's vacation, I'm feeling less than wonderful about our experience!

Anyone else have a bad experience on a vacation?

Getting sick on vacation is lousy and no fair. Sorry that happened to you. I hope you can remember the good times that you did have there.

Yes, about 15 years ago on a trip to Europe just about everything that could go wrong on a vacation went wrong. It makes for a pretty funny story to tell now though, and one of the people on the trip has since passed away so it's now a special memory.

My coworker just returned from Turkey. She said on her 12 hour flight back many people, including herself, contracted food poisoning from the meal they served. (Delta, if you are wondering.) She said there was a line for the bathroom and many people actually using the puke bags while standing in line.

In case you want other stories.

That is pretty crappy to share the cold with the babysitter and your co-workers. You could have gotten it anywhere in, including the plane, airport or eating out.

There was a great thread on this topic last summer with some epic stories. I can't find the original thread, but this one mentions some of the original vacations (e.g., fighting over which parent gets to stay in the hospital with the sick child rather than hang with the ILs on a Hawaiian vacation).

Summer re-cap: How did that beach vacation with the inlaws go?

We were the guests from hell earlier this year - we arrived all perfectly healthy, but my 3 year old proceeded to get a stomach virus that then spread through the rest of our immediate family and then the host's family, including grandma, an 18 month old toddler and the pregnant mom.

The nearest hotel was 2 hours away and probably $300/night. Everyone was a good sport about it, but we were so embarrassed.

No vacations from hell, but I've had two business trips from hell. They made me cry.

We have to use our travel budget to visit family. Every time we visit my ILs, it's pretty bad. Just depressing, boring, too much TV, bad food, etc. I hate that we pay $1k to travel there. I hope to one day be able to take a real vacation again.

And to be fair, every time we visit my parents, it's stressful, boring, and too much TV.

When my only child was about 5.5 weeks old, my DH had to go out of town on business and I was dreading it, b/c I needed the help. So, I thought it would be a fun and relaxing distraction to go somewhere that was an "easy" drive away with my mom and baby. We decided to go to the Homestead.

1. It was not an easy drive. At all.
2. It was a total dump - I understand they have new owners new, but at the time it was not owned by Omni and was really in very poor shape.
3. We had BEDBUGS.. yep. And then had to switch rooms at 3:30 am one night after finding the bedbugs. With a newborn who was screaming the entire time.
4. The food was totally disgusting and overpriced on top of it.
5. A family a few doors down had an accident in the hallway where the kid knocked out his two front teeth and we had to go help find emergency help for them.. newborn in tow.. since there were no emergency phones in the windy twisty hallways... that was a sight I hope to never see again, poor kid

All in all, I cringe whenever I hear the word "Homestead."

Nemacolin—not my idea—was pretty bad. It wasn't hellish, but what a total waste of time and money. Everything was trying to appear high class but the food was awful.

Cruise with a 2 year old. Horrible.

Costa Rica on our honeymoon. Sketchy first hotel...then hubby got an infection from the hot springs ...a day later I got a parasite. We spent the second half of our honeymoon holed up in our hotel room...sick.

It took almost 6 months to get rid of the parasite and I have permanent intestinal scarring and can't eat dairy.

Vacations from hell...at least you will never forget the memories..,
