| We know someone who rented an apartment near Woodson high school and used the rental lease to get the kids into Woodson high school then moved out of the Woodson boundary to a cheaper housing but still keep the kids in Woodson. Should this be reported? How to report this anonymously? Just thought this kind of abuse should be stopped but don't know how to report this. Will school take action if reported? Thanks! |
| How do you know they're no longer on that lease? |
we know for sure (they told us that). They moved away for much cheaper housing. New tenants have moved in their apartment. |
| Are they really poor? Are you? |
They are driving BMW so don't think ithey are too poor. But not sure. We were just neighbors for less than a month. They are just new immigrants who think they can abuse the system and get away. But it seems that they are getting away if nobody reports it. |
Create an email account without your name associated with it and send an email message to the school principal. |
The county might catch up with them, if someone notices where the mail goes. The best bet is to call/write the school and report it. Where it gets ugly, though, is when people move out of the county and do this...then they can be prosecuted for fraud/theft of services. (at minimum, they would owe tuition). It is possible that they did request and receive pupil placement. We ended up in a situation where a house fire made our place uninhabitable for a while. We talked to the school, and even though the school was over crowded, and closed, DD was able to stay in the school (insurance co found us temporary housing but not in our pyramid). But, we owned the property, and had every intention of moving back once the damage was repaired, which took about 3 months. |
hell yeah report it! |
Were they living in the first apartment and then moved? Are any of their kids juniors or seniors? They could well meet the criteria for allowing transfers, and be there legally. |
I teach at another FCPS high school, and I have had a couple of students who had to move mid-year because the school found out they were no longer in the boundary. I am not sure how they found out, but they did. That said, I am sure there are many more who the school doesn't know about - I have seen cars with Maryland tags dropping off students in the morning. Yes, I know it could be a relative who legitimately lives in Maryland giving them a ride to school, but I know some people are taking advantage of the system. |
These people may live in VA but have their cars registered in MD. I know people do this, but am not sure why. So there may be a violation, but not of school boundaries. |
Car tax. MD cars don't pay it and VA cars pay $$$. |
What a cowardly thing to do. |

You also don't know if the kid is in Woodson for a specific program that might not be at their base school.
My local HS doesn't teach the language my kids study. I would much rather have my kids on the bus to the local HS. Also, kids get PP (Pupil Placed) for a variety of reasons. Woodson is a stressful school, it wouldn't be my first choice (but I get it would be others) |
| I say if people want to go through the burden of transporting their kids to school, let them. It will catch up with them eventually. If you have the time and energy to report them, I think you should do so legitimately and stand by your decision (if confronted). Otherwise, let it go. Focus your energy on something positive. |
