School boundary abuse

Anonymous
There are boundaries for a reason. Gaming the system is wrong.

Report.

As an aside, my dad actually used to investigate these boundary fraud cases for the school system he worked for. Does it suck for the kids to move? Yes. But parents who commit fraud need to be caught. As others say, it's a fairness issue.

How does Fairfax County track who pays the car tax? I see that stickers are no longer required unless you're within a FFX Cty town. Neighbors moved in from a neighboring county never updated their registrations. So if you have VA tags and move into FFX Cty, it's much easier to get away with it. If the school asks for a car registration, just say you don't own a car. I see that FFX Cty was stepping up enforcement of those who don't pay the car tax if they have out of state tags, but what about those with VA tags? Why did they do away with windshield stickers?

Should this be reported? How to report this anonymously? Just thought this kind of abuse should be stopped but don't know how to report this. Will school take action if reported? Thanks!

hell yeah report it!

I teach at another FCPS high school, and I have had a couple of students who had to move mid-year because the school found out they were no longer in the boundary. I am not sure how they found out, but they did. That said, I am sure there are many more who the school doesn't know about - I have seen cars with Maryland tags dropping off students in the morning. Yes, I know it could be a relative who legitimately lives in Maryland giving them a ride to school, but I know some people are taking advantage of the system.

These people may live in VA but have their cars registered in MD. I know people do this, but am not sure why. So there may be a violation, but not of school boundaries.

[b]Car tax. MD cars don't pay it and VA cars pay $$$.

Yes, but property (i.e. home) taxes are much higher in MD than in VA so its a bit of a wash.

Hey, The OP (and others) think it's their responsibility to police these things. So...you must report these scofflaws.

The people in VA that go to MD and buy things and fail to report the use tax really burn me up. Rules are rules. They. Must. Be. Reported.

Is this really a thing? Because you are saving oly a few dollars so I doubt people are going to avoid taxes? What are people not reporting that you are so upset about?

We currently have a car with a md temp tag because we had to go to silver spring to buy the one we wanted. It will be permanently tagged in va, though.

They are driving BMW so don't think ithey are too poor. But not sure. We were just neighbors for less than a month. They are just new immigrants who think they can abuse the system and get away. But it seems that they are getting away if nobody reports it.

Ah, I think I understand your motivation now...

I bet they are illegal, too - I mean undocumented.
They do not understand the value of honesty in this country. They need to be educated. I'd report.

CHeck the boundary regulations. In my district (out of the DVM area) you had to life within the boundary on the first day of school. You could move outside the boundary after that and stay for the school year.

Not true in Fairfax. You have to move to the new school district ... but they can give you a waiver if it's within 60 days (or something like that) of the end of the school year. Otherwise,.... you got to move on.
