On Friday I got an email on Linkedin from a recruiter for a big company with that is located about 5 minutes from my house. Its for a corporate tax counsel position, so I clearly do not have the experience they are looking for. If the guy even bothered to look at my linkedin profile, he would see this. I emailed him back and said I am very interested in the company (Hellllllo, five minute commute!) but I don't have all of the experience they are looking for. he wrote back asking me to send him my resume. Do recruiters just email anybody and everybody blindly on linkedin without taking the time to review profiles?
Short answer - yes. They email anyone who looks like they might be a potential fit because the more people that they contact, the better the chances of finding a great candidate. Recruiters usually don't get paid unless they place someone, so they want to find a good someone for the slot.
It can't hurt to start a conversation. At the very least, the recruiter then knows what you are looking for if something else comes along and it doesn't cost you anything but a few minutes on the phone.
