Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS)

Someone posted that there is a large group of Carson families zoned for Westfield who contracr for a private bus to take their kids from Carson to Langley "for Russian" ie to avoid sending them to Westfield with the poors.
The language transfers need to stop. Either every school needs to offer the same two basic languages or the other languages can be offered online only. |
Exactly. The school board opened itself up to a scrutiny of these type of arrangements when they decided that they needed to backfill those spaces with kids from other pyramids boss the boundary review. |
And what would those 2 languages be? |
There are multiple carpool groups from outside the district that do the same thing to attend Langley. I don’t know if it still goes on, but in the past (as of ~4 years ago), there were multiple instances of out-of-district kids who started in the Russian language program and later dropped out of that program, but were permitted to continue to attend the school. |
Does FCPS have an OIG? Seems like so much of this fraud waste and abuse in the system. Maybe instead of hiring a law firm when the superintendent messes up, they could actually exercise an oversight function? Is that too much to ask in our county? |
There are 12 that go to Langley from Westfield according to the dashboard. There are 30 that transfer to "overcrowded" Chantilly according to the dashboard. Chantilly is more convenient for many families in Westfield district--closer in some cases, but 30 is a lot of transfer to a crowded school. And, Chantilly is not significantly "wealthier" than Westfield. As for the "Russian" draw at Langley. There are a number of Russian born parents in the area. But, 12 is a lot. |
These aren’t examples of fraud. If a school is open to transfers, they allow students to attend for programming such as foreign language, IB, and AP. The transfers are accounted for on the dashboard (12 students transfer from Westview to Langley, for example.) If the student doesn’t meet the threshold for those programs (ie drops the language or doesn’t take enough APs) they can be sent back to their home school, but principals can make exceptions to allow them to continue. |
Years ago, there was a kid in my neighborhood who transferred to another school to ensure a college sports scholarship. He thought playing for the better team would help. His mother claimed that he had "social anxiety" issues at his base school. (He transferred as a sophomore.) He had been elected captain of one of his sports teams at his base school. He was involved actively and successfully in two sports. Mom was pretty open about how they achieved the transfer. FWIW, the D1 scholarship did not happen as expected. He was far from a star on the team, though he was not mediocre. |
Oversight is key. I didn’t say transfers were fraud, but they should be scrutinized in an environment where they are looking to move students from other pyramids to backfill those student spots who are transferring out. |
The issue shouldn’t be with parents who pupil place their kids to schools with space but an incompetent Facilities department that expands schools when they merely need to be renovated and ignores schools that need additions because they aren’t in some antiquated “queue” adopted over 15 years ago. We’re all paying the price now - and that will include Langley parents if they get shipped off to Herndon soon to backfill HHS and justify that school’s unnecessary expansion to nearly 2800 seats. |
I do agree with this. For example, if over 150 students are transferring from one high school to another for AP or IB, maybe they should stand up a program at the home school, since demand is so high. Same with AAP. Those transfer rates should be evaluated before they start expanding boundaries to catch more students. |
+1. |
I posted the AP Langley 12 in from AP Westfield. Russian is only offered at TJ and Langley so it should also be in the academy language line up with Chinese, Arabic, Korean, Vietnamese. Japanese should also be academy only at the high school level. The massive volume of transfers from Herndon to South Lakes is a huge red flag. HHS now has mega square footage which does not fit with the middle school capacity. So what can be done with it as a pyramid and site? HHS can get AAP at HMS and add academy courses to the HS site. Change some courses from Chantilly to Herndon. The CIP breaks out square footage in buildings for some sped programs/centers but not academies. Marshall and Chantilly are overcap for core instruction with modulars yet loaded with academies. |
Maybe HHS could be used for the aviation academy? Seems like a good fit with Dulles nearby. |
| So we’re supposed to believe there’s no money to expand schools that have been overcrowded for years, but we can launch new aviation Academy programs? FTS. |
