I feel that in recent years this once super prestigious school has taken a bad rap fair or unfair. Feel like I hear much more about the party and Frat antics that I do the academics-
My D wants to go visit though it would be a slight reach school for her- her advisor thought it would be one of two good reaches for her to apply to. Based upon what I have read and heard though I'm not impressed what are your thoughts? |
| Dartmouth has always been this way. It's a fine college if you are the type to keep your head down and stay out of trouble, but it's certainly no better than other SLACs that don't happen to be part of the same athletic conference. |

I am an alum and this made me happy. |
|
Always been a drinking school.
<i>Animal House/<i> is based on Alpha Delta Phi frat at Dartmouth. |
| Dartmouth has always been a school that graduates hordes of alcoholics. It used to be that no one cared. |

I think Dartmouth is really underrated to be honest. The alum network is fiercely loyal. One of the best in the country - perhaps only 2nd to Princeton's.
It has all the benefits of a SLAC without the downside of weak OCR/OCI. All the top firms recruit at Dartmouth. Even though AWS are extremely strong, you can't say the same about them. |
| I do think the reputation is tarnished and as an example my best friends son who is a top top student (ivy league for sure) applied to all Ivies except Dartmouth. They really did their research and felt it was not on par with the others. They have some cleaning house to do it appears, plus that frat boys "biography" about his time at Dartmouth sure didn't help things! |
| Dartmouth is a unique Ivy League institution. More rural and smaller than Cornell. Not as haughty as HYP. It is the type of place where lifelong friendships are made. Not sure that the other Ivies place this quality very high on the list of institutional goals. The faculty commitment to undergraduate instruction is another positive distinction. Do the students party harder than their peers at the other Ivies? Most likely and that aspect needs to be considered by potential applicants. Definitely not for everybody. |
Impressive. |
| It's a shame about Dartmouth; the school has a lot to offer, but the problem goes beyond the drinking -- it's the misogynistic culture. |
|
Dartmouth students don't kill themselves or blow through mounds of coke at the rate Penn students do.
It's weird Dartmouth gets a bad rap because Penn is way more toxic of a culture. |

I went there and believe that the media loves a good Dartmouth story. The same drinking, partying and shenanigans went on at every college my high school friends attended. My best friend went to William and Mary and her frat party stories astonished me. The undergrads at my grad ( another Ivy) school partied much more if the sidewalk vomit and beer bottles were any indication.
I was not Greek and didn't find it a social liability. Frat parties were open to all -- they were not "exclusive." What I loved about Dartmouth was the beautiful sense of place you feel living on that campus, and the wonderful teachers. They pride themselves n their focus on undergraduate teaching. My classmates were smart, interesting, passionate, cared about social issues, and diverse in their experiences and opinions. They've gone on to do amazing things in politics, medicine, social work, entertainment, publishing, business, law, scientific research, and art. Just one of the women I met there... http://m.fastcompany.com/3046300/the-new-rules-of-work/how-to-ask-a-ceo-to-create-a-job-for-you?partner=rss |
| A relative of mine went to Dartmouth. She is seriously one of the most mature, well-adjusted, super attractive women I know. She never dated a single guy at Dartmouth because she said they were all immature _____. |

Almost 20% of the incoming class is Asian. After years of it hovering around 13-15%, it's good to see Dartmouth becoming not sandbagging Asians as much.
With such a spike, I wonder if it is because of the multiple OCR complaints students have filed against Harvard. |
