Marina’s father did have more money than the cousins. The father owed Marina’s father money and was paying for Marina to stay with them. Remember Lady Featherington telling her husband that they would not have to be bothered with Marina, but for the fact her husband’s gambling debt and Marina’s father providing money for her stay. I’m doing Marina’s father knew of her pregnancy because Marina did not know until she arrived to the Featherington home. Dad probably just wanted her away from the temptations and wagging tongues.

Explains the surplus of suitors compared to her cousins. More attractive and wealthier.

But didn't Lady Featherington describe Marina as a poor country cousin with a mere four-figure dowry? In episode 1 right before Marina arrives. Now, at the time she didn't know her husband had squandered their entire fortune away. It shows how desperate Lord F was if he borrowed from a "poorer" cousin.

Wow! In a show as simple as this, here is a person that got it right! Lady thought Marina was a poor country cousin, then she learned differently! Yet, so many pps on this thread can't follow this simple storyline? I don't recall this being in the books at all.
No wonder we are reaching more death than in WWII with a virus that you only need a mask to not get and don't go to indoor gathering places!

I don't recall any scene in which we learn that Lady F's statement about Marina's dowry was wrong. What was wrong was her assumption that her family was better off than Marina's, because she didn't know her husband had gambled away their fortune. But that doesn't mean Marina was loaded. She could be reasonably well-off, with an okay but not great dowry, as minor country gentry would be.

You are correct, PP. We learn Lady F is actually destitute due to husband’s gambling but Marina’s dowry (or lack thereof)remains the same.

Well I mean, you have people on here complaining that the cast wasn’t all white.

I love the show but it has nothing to do with the color of anyone’s skin. The actors are phenomenal and attractive and sexy and the story is captivating.

I gave it a try but Daphne is insufferable. I had to quit the show.

Tell that to the posters who are claiming the diversity was distracting.

Just finished watching. Meh.

It was gorgeous to look at. I guessed who Lady W was early and accurately so that was a bummer. Loved the diverse cast - none of these roles require a specific skin color. I read historical fiction but not romance so I knew it might jot be my cup of tea. I just found all of Simon and Daphne’s conflict kind of foolish instead of compelling. Oh no we love each other hut are being “forced” to marry because of prudish more of the era. So what? And the sex scene on the marble staircase, in a house with probably a dozen beds? I didn’t hate it like some PPs have but also didn’t go nuts for it.

He called me again to impress on me what a great show it is and that I must like it and keep trying!
Boring books, boring show.
BTW, when are we getting the Dark-Hunters series on some streaming service? Now I'd totally watch that!

Your FIL?? I’m sorry, but that is gross.

Could you please decipher this gibberish?

I liked the diversity because of I couldn’t tell any of the white men characters apart

She struck me as just right for the role - very pretty, specifically for that era, but not beautiful. And I don’t think she was supposed to be beautiful, which is why she didn’t have any suitors until her agreement with Simon.

I thought this shown was pretty horrible, but I do think Daphne was perfectly cast.

I thought Daphne was plain Jane looking. But also the Duke is the hottest man on Earth so maybe everyone would look like plain Jane next to him.

I had no problem with Daphne, or any of the other casting other than Eloise- she sounds and looks like a middle aged smoker

+1. I thought Daphne and the rest of them were very well cast EXCEPT for Eloise. I found her to be so distracting because she did not seem like the younger sister. As PP said, she looked and sounded like a middle aged smoker. For me, the story came to a screeching halt evey time she was on screen.

When Daphne and Simon moved into their London home and were ‘on the outs,’ why did he go down on her on the staircase if he was going to dump her immediately afterward?
What was the point of this?

Ratings.

Exactly. They clearly know their audience. 🤑

They know this audience. I had no problem with it.

Even though all the actors are British, they sound like they are speaking with the fakest British accents possible. lol

I remember reading in a mystery novel from the 1950s a passing comment from one of the characters that of course all blacks looked the same and you couldn't tell them apart. It was set in a Caribbean island and I remember thinking wow, what a crass and racist thing to say.

Funny how some things never change.

The 3 brothers did look a lot alike. That isn't racist to say.
