Most pretentious name you've heard?

How about Sterling?

Olivier.

Far as I know, the parents are American-raised. No one knows exactly how to pronounce the kid's name, since we are not French, but rather Americans. The kid doesn't know either, since he's 1.5 years old so asking him doesn't help.

I mean, they are Teen Mom trying to be "fancy."

Yeah, actually fancy people name their kids, like, Catherine and John.

non-white people aren't allowed to be fancy I guess

Ridiculous does not equal pretentious.
Generic, Christian names do not equal pretentious.

Pretentious is "expressive of affected, unwarranted, or exaggerated importance, worth, or stature."

You're welcome.

Like the name Penny ?

Is Penny pretentious? Right now Penelope nn Penny is at the top of our list (after an old family friend of mine who was like a grandmother to me when I was a girl). It feels like a good mix since Penelope is more formal and could be used professionally later in life but Penny feels bright and unassuming to us, the opposite of pretentious.

Just surprised to see it mentioned in this thread and wondering why!

I went to elementary school in the 80s with a Dagny and she was the complete opposite of pretentious. Ayn Rand's books were a big thing in CA way back when.

No way ! That is hysterical

Shouldn't the other girl have been Beatrice if they were going full Frenchy on the Genevieve? Beatrix makes me think of Beatrix Potter.

Yeah I thought it was weird then they started talking super pretentiously about it so I stopped listening.

Ok, please explain to me how the French pronunciation differs from the America English one? I speak French (and British English) and am not aware of a difference, for either name.

Jen-ev-veev vs John-vee-ev
