Why do corporations act like this and aren't they concerned about this becoming a public relations disaster. It's in the New York Times.

Answering your first question, corporations act like this because it saves them money. Obviously, it's cheaper to procure an H1-B visa for a worker (and pay them peanuts, I'd guess, with no benefits) than to keep a US citizen on the payroll. Welcome to the free-market economy! |
| Well, people voted Congress in so we get the government we deserve. Corporations care more about money than US citizens. What do you expect? |
| Oh man. People should boycott. Haven't we learned our lesson from outsourcing jobs to India. Nothing is more annoying than getting an Indian guy when you have computer problems or getting an Indian to book an airline ticket. |
| I actually think America's downfall was largely because of outsourcing jobs and also letting in too many unskilled immigrants. That's not trolling -- that's the truth. |
Yep, because software engineers from India are unskilled immigrants. Your intelligence leaves me in awe. |
Trust me, I totally understand. I hate calling any company and getting a rep with a thick heavy accent and telling me his name is "Bob". My dad spent 2 hrs holding, got someone like this and promptly hung up. Didn't blame him one bit. |
America's downfall? I missed have missed something. |
|
It's one thing to say: US citizens who are qualified for a competitive job deserve better chances of employment at a US company than similarly qualified immigrants.
It's a whole 'other thing to say "those obviously qualified immigrants are actually not qualified and I say that because I hate their race and THAT'S why Americans should be employed at said company!" The fucking morons ITT. |
Because disney (like apple) has transcended bad PR because they 'got that crack'. ESPN, Marvel Comics, Star Wars, Mickey Mouse - their IP has the masses addicted like crack. Bad PR doesn't hurt Disney like it would GM. |
Corporations legal responsibility is to their shareholders, to increase profits. Its a bummer when our free-economy benefits other countries. |
|
This is all over, and it's a disgrace. It's also technically illegal, but no one cares since there are no consequences. This is also legalized age discrimination since - as with Disney - many of the displaced are older workers. Meanwhile, their young poorly paid replacements will be worked to death - without overtime, since they will be classified as 'managers'. Personally, I think this is short-sighted on the part of the corporations. Many foreign workers have decent communication skills, but many do not. This can cause real problems. Anyone who tried accessing the first iteration of the Obamacare website saw this firsthand.
You can and should boycott Disney, but this is really the fault of our craven politicians who support the corporate fiction that there aren't enough qualified American workers to do these jobs. |
+1. Indeed, welcome to the free-market economy! If you don't like it, your best bet right now is North Korea. Or perhaps Venezuela? Decades ago you would have had a few more options but, I don't know why, they imploded. |
Please boycott your computer (if you use windows - microsoft 'outsourced' their CEO job in your view, right?)? Please boycott all pepsi products (since they 'outsourced' their ceo job) Please boycott all mastercard cards (since they 'outsourced' their ceo job) Please boycott google (since they 'outsourced' the mature product chief job) |
| Globalization. I believe Americans coined that term, right? You did not complain when it gave American companies access to other markets. So, don't complain now. |
