Looking at joining orangetheory pros and cons? Anyone have experience with this concept?

You can sign up for a set of 10 sessions to try it. It is a h### of a workout. I could barely move the next day. But it got better. I like the way it is organized but admit I am not good at all with the floor exercises.

I went to an Orange Theory copycat gym and loved it. It is HARD. I wouldn't go if you aren't already working out. I enjoyed it and it was the best thing for weight loss that I tried.

I have a friend who lives in Denver and swears by orange theory. Where is there one here?? I've been dying to try it.

One is opening up in Dunn Loring (Aug) but I believe they have locations.

I've been going for about a year. It is as hard as you make it. They give options/modifications depending on your fitness level so the participants range from more experienced/regular exercisers to those just starting out. It can be really hard if you put a full effort into it, but it is also structured that you can take it easier (lighter weights, slower speed on treadmill/lower incline, etc)

I actually looked into franchising because I really thought it was the most innovative approach to group exercise -- still do think that. If you need to be motivated by classes/coaches or a schedule, Orangetheory is great. The realtime heart rate monitoring is also a selling point but I don't really buy into the "post exercise" after burn that they use as key benefit of the workout.

EPOC is real but it's true for most exercise so it sounds like a marketing gimmick. I'm still interested though and will give it a try. It does look like a good workout .

I love Orange Theory. It kicks my ass and I sleep great when I do it.

I go to the one in Gaithersburg and love it. In MD they're also opening one in Olney, Clarksburg and N. Potomac.

How many times a week do you go? I am thinking about joining. Is once a week enough?

I try to go 3x a week but I don't do anything else outside of the program. I think that if you're doing other activities including strength training in addition to the program, once or twice would be okay.

I just read this and ran to the OTF website to see where the north Potomac one is going to be, and it's 10 minutes from my house. Squeeee!!!! i'm so excited! Of course, it's going in to Park Potomac so who knows how long it'll be but still.

Do they guide you though the moves? How is it different than another gym? I'm too intimidated to go for a tour. I don't want the hard sell.

The trainer models the moves on the floor first and then keeps an eye on your form while you're doing them. It's different from other gyms because you're getting strength and cardio together in a hour long workout and it is different every time you go. I like wearing the heart rate monitor and seeing the data in real time. It also helps motivate me to work harder to get into a higher zone. It's basically a much better workout than I would get by going to the gym and being in charge of my own workout, but much less expensive than hiring a personal trainer.
