| my 4yo son is very low tone. my older DC uses a trail a bike to go on long rides with us. i think my DS is probably too tall for the bike seat on the back of my bike (he is super tall). he definitely is not strong enough to use a trail a bike for any length of time. do i need to buy him a trailer? i would love to use a recumbent trail a bike or something along those lines...i saw something by Weehoo https://www.bikekidshop.com/weehoo-igo-venture-bike-trailer-cycle-2014-p-3446.html but man it is pricey!!! i am wondering if there is something else out there. thanks! |
I would think the trail a bike would work, the adult would have to work harder. Why do yo think he would not be strong enough to sit on the trail a bike for long periods? How long are your long rides? |
| There are bike seats for larger children that are not cheap, but are less than the trailer. Bobike (Bobike.com) has seats for kids up to age 10 / 75 lbs. |
OP here, it is not the pedaling but just holding on to the handlebar AND keeping himself upright/balanced so that he does not fall off. his hand grasping ability is only 9% and he has very weak core muscles. no way can he remain upright for very long. |
OP here, thanks, I will check it out. |

Get a trail bike. We got one. Our son could not really do it well at 4, but this year at 5 he loves it.
We got this one and its great. Only complaint is it is a bit heavy. http://www.walmart.com/ip/WeeRide-Co-Pilot-Child-Bike-Trailer/24772106 |
OP here. we have a trail a bike for my DD. it is great for kids that can use them. DS undoubtedly will in the future, but he is weak right now and has little tolerance for things that require balance. i am looking for something that we can use right now for long (1 hour or so) bike rides. |
Okay, now I understand. I agree, the recumbent looks cool. I like the PP's idea of a bigger seat, that makes the trip nicer for him- he can see better. |

My son went to the school for physical disabilities preschool. My son has low muscle tone, but for the student in his class with a more severe case of low muscle tone, they got the Wee Hoo. When kid was 4. She was so excited to go biking with her family. |

I have seen them closer on Craigslist, but not necessarily when you need one. |
That is very cool! |
| I just saw this on amazon; would it offer enough support? http://www.amazon.com/Trail-A-Bike-140268-01-Back-Rest/dp/B000SMS7IC/ref=pd_sim_sbs_468_5?ie=UTF8&refRID=0YJ0P3YNRB0QJ2BH6TF0 |
| OP here. Thanks all! We will go with the weehoo...we are going to spend almost the same on a trail a bike with the backrest (which is really cool actually) but by the time he can use the trail a bike maybe his sister will be on her own bike anyway...no need to have two. And I really want him to feel like part of the outing and pedal. He gets down when he can't be part of the family action. |
You are an awesome parent. (From a mom of low tone kid, who prioritizes biking. -- My kid always has a bike that fits him, it is PT. He is almost 8 and we bike on Sligo Creek Trail between playgrounds. We invite friends. We go for 10 minutes here and 20 minutes there. We went to a playground which had a loop. (Both of us with bikes.) We pretended we were playing Mario Kart, we did 3 loops and then a victory loop, then home. |
We use the Weehoo... but whoever is riding the bike with the Weehoo needs to be in great shape. My husband rides it, no way in the world I could do it. Very heavy and a little awkward at first.
We are big into biking also. |
