People you hate at your gym

Anonymous
There's this woman that bothers me and apparently a lot of other people at my gym (based on the conversation some other people were having as I left today). She shows up to every group fitness class at least 15 minutes late, weekday, weekend, doesn't matter. The classes are usually conditioning/weightlifting classes that require a lot of equipment and set-up. She arrives late and asks people to move so she can have one of her favorite spots, she does nothing to minimize the class disruption of getting her equipment (instead I am convinced that it's deliberate--she seems like she wants to be noticed), she then adjusts the room fans to her temperature (she always wants to turn the fans down when she's just arrived nevermind other people who are already hot since class started 15 minutes ago). After all of this, she only sort of does the class (she's older and does what pleases her) and then she leaves early. I have no idea why she comes. She is clearly not serious about exercise (there are classes at my gym for older people) and she doesn't even wear proper footwear (sandals half the time). I don't get it. Why would someone be so disruptive on purpose for no reason?

Anyone else?

(And before anyone takes this as a rant about older people at the gym, it's not. I'm not particularly young and there are plenty of very fit older people in my classes.)

My gym has a rule that people can't enter more than 5 minutes after class starts. You should advise your gym to do the same. If that person asked me to move, I would say no. The person is still annoying, but there's no need to be a doormat.

This. I'm surprised your gym is tolerant of this behavior.

There's a guy at my gym who randomly yells (at the top of his lungs) HOO-RAH while on the treadmill. Scares the shit out of me every time.

OP here. It's a national chain and we do have that lateness rule but it's not enforced unless the room is really jam-packed (like right around New Years resolution time).

the people who grunt very loudly when using weights, the people who drop the weights causing the floor to shake, the people who use equipment and don't put it away, the ones who monopolize equipment by just sitting on it and not moving even when you politely ask them to work in...

That's like a woman who regularly comes in 10-15 minutes late to Zumba classes at my gym. She goes in, tries to find a spot in the back, but people like the safety of the back so it's usually "full." If it's possible, people try and make space for people. But this woman doesn't care, she will stand 8" from you. And she'll not only change spots every song, but 2-3x in the middle of a song. It's one thing to move into an empty spot, but she thinks it's a damn game of musical chairs or something all through class. And then sometimes she'll lie on the floor in the back of the room (where there are people, mind you - it's usually a packed class) and do stretches in the middle of zumba class.

I completely do not understand how some people have such little knack for basic social norms/etiquette.

The trainers at my gym who ogle women or make fun of the older out of shape women. I want to change gyms.

Make sure you're in her preferred spot and don't move when she expects you to. People behave badly because it gets them what they want. You can shut that down by politely refusing to move for her when she's late.

LOL!!

We have a few trainers who shout or clap loudly when sets are done.

There used to be a woman like that at my gym. She also made nasty comments about other gym members. Members complained to management repeatedly and eventually her membership was revoked. There's actually a thread about her behavior on DCUM. So maybe get others to complain often and your gym will do something about it?

The person who stomps while running on the threadmill. Oh My..super annoying!

lol about the stomping while running. Some people just run like that. I remember a while back this person thought another person was being difficult by stomping their feet while they were running. But we had to tell him that's how that person actually runs. You probably had to be there to see how it was funny.

The people who I can't stand are the ones who aren't even that in shape and either are very loud at the gym and/or don't put their equipment back. No problem if you're just starting out or whatever. But at least put back the weights when you're done.

There's a woman at our gym who will spend well over an hour on the stair master. Sweat flying everywhere, puddle around the machine on the floor, people waiting. She's in there every time I go in, whether during working hours or at night. Just being near her extreme intensity stresses (and grosses) me out.
