Is boxing good for weight loss/management?

I'm about 5 lbs from my goal weight, and have been stuck there for some time. Was thinking of switching up my exercise routine. Could boxing help re-kick things into gear? I hear that it's a great calorie burner... but is that true in actuality? Anyone experience weightloss from boxing classes?

Tried kick boxing. Amazing. Imagine boxing would also be quite vigorous, even without the foot kicks.

absolutely yes! only lost a few pounds, like you, didn't have much to lose to begin with, but my arms, back, abs really noticed the difference. definitely a good way to change up workout routine, and it also feels really good to hit things sometimes!

Boxing is an intense workout. Most of the boxing workouts I've done are not only punches. There's a lot of HIIT training mixed in there. Think, jumping jacks, jogging and sprinting, burpees, pushups, squats and lunges -- both standing and plyo, jump rope. Basically, you're mixing high intensity cardio with punches and blocks. It's great for your abs, also, because you are basically doing standing ab exercises for the entire workout if you are using correct form. I go to Title Boxing Club for both boxing and kickboxing classes. You're doing 15 minutes of cardio in the beginning, 30 minutes of boxing or kickboxing on a heavy bag (unless you're doing a 12-round class), and finally 15 minutes of abs using the bag and a medicine ball. You will also notice a lot more definition in your arms and shoulders.

I used to take a cardio boxing class and a cardio kickboxing class at Gold's. They were fantastic, both for mood regulation (anger issues? gone!) and for calorie burning. I was in really great shape when I took those classes. (I have a kid now so it's hard to fit in classes.)

See if LA Boxing has a gym in your area, or if one of the martial arts gyms offers something.

Another one here who loved kickboxing. Really great for cardio and also strength.

my husband poo-poo'ed it and I took him to a class-- this was back in the day when he was hitting the gym 5x/week running and lifting. His ass was kicked by the kickboxing class.

Similar experience here--I got my SIL (who works out regularly and intensely) to try my kickboxing classes and she said it was tough!

Depends on your personality. Boxing class is one of those activities that you get out as much as you put in. In other words, it is easy to have a light workout. You have to be able to push yourself. If you can, then it will change you. Some people need more accountability, e.g. spin class, crossfit type workout, etc. where effort and progress is more measurable.

I'm addicted to kickboxing. I attend at a martial arts center. I have noticed weight loss, but I'm more shapely. My legs, arms, shoulders and butt are noticeably more toned. I didn't alter my diet, so that's why my weight hasn't dropped.

You cannot exercise your way to weight loss. It happens in the kitchen.period.

Five lbs? What makes you think you are five lbs? Maybe you could get the body you want just by gaining some muscle.

What size gloves would you recommend for a 5'2", 125lb woman? In pretty good shape, but not some kind of super pro fitness badass. 12oz? 14oz?

My gloves came with the class. I believe they are 12oz.
