| I did a search but couldn't find the answer. The myschooldc site says that waitlists "remain active" for the duration of the school year, but does that mean people will be getting calls throughout the academic year?? Thanks. |
| A couple of years ago, we got a notice in August that we could enroll from the wait list. |
| After count day, the charters stop enrolling and start sending their bad apples to DCPS. So I'd say you can count on some movement until then (typically first or second week of Oct.). |
| Theoretically they remain active, but there's a lot less movement after count day. It also depends on the context. Sometimes even if they don't typically add kids after a certain date, they will if it's a sibling, to keep the family happy. |
| October for BASIS |
| It depends on the school. DCPS usually fills seats after count day; we moved to our DCPS for PK3 in December. Some charters do, some don't. |
It mist not be a highly regarded school. Waiting list for that grade typically is very long. |
It was a great move for us. From a DCUM perspective, though, we left a better-regarded school for a less-well regarded school. But we are much happier where we are now. I don't base what is best for my child on what DCUM posters think. |
How do you know where the PP was on the waitlist? Besides, by December I imagine a lot of people would say no if offered a slot, so schools can probably move through the list pretty quickly. |
| Wow; I wouldn't have expected movement in December. Good to know; thanks. Any advice on things you know in hindsight that would prepare a student and has family moving to a charter in Dec? |
| I have heard of December movement-- it happens when a family moves away. People are less likely to move their kid that late in the year, so sometimes go pretty deep on the WL to fill the spot. But I would do it if I really liked the school, or to consolidate siblings. |
I have to say that I was very nervous about it, but my child did great--I told her on Friday, "today is your last day at this school; let's make sure to say bye to your teachers and friends. On Monday, you are starting at a new school." I thought it would be hard, but Monday came, and all was fine. I think part of it is that three-year-olds are much more adaptable than I am! We did talk to the teacher at the new school before our child began, and she said she would make sure to help support the transition, especially by doing some of the activities that they typically do at the start of the year--for example, doing the name game at circle time so DD could learn all the other kids' names. She also asked us to email a picture of DD, and she had everything ready for her, including putting her picture on her cubby. She felt very welcomed and has really had no problems since the move. To those wondering why there was waitlist movement in December--it was a PK3 class and one parent decided a few months in that their child was not ready for full-time school. We felt very lucky to get in! |
| January at a HRCS for pk4. |
| PP, do you mind sharing which HRCS in January? Thank you |
| Brent took a pk4 kid off the wait list around March last year I think. |
