Southern Charm

Maryland is not culturally southern. No one in the south thinks of Maryland as "the South." Regarding Shep's treatment of Craig, I wonder how much of his disdain and mistreatment of Craig is real and how much is to create some drama/plot for the show. He seems so resentful that Craig would want to be "like him" just b/c he is originally from Delaware or Maryland or wherever he is from and does not come from old money.

I used to really like Patricia, but she's a mean girl, too. Summonsing her butler with her little bell to bring her martinis while sitting around gossiping about someone 50 years younger than her isn't my idea of a cool lady. I'm not a fan of Kathryn at all. Clearly she has made a lot of bad choices, but continuing to make all those snide comments at her expense doesn't sit well with me. In some ways Patricia reminds me of LVP, but even Lisa has a soft spot for her "troubled" employees on VPR.

Craig just seems really naive and I feel bad for him. He majored in FINANCE and is REALLY smart so of course, he can run a bourbon business?? Why should it matter that he has no experience? BUT what I don't get is why Shep is on him all the time about taking the bar or his career when it's really unclear how Shep uses any of his time in even a remotely productive way.

I enjoyed the last episode so much more without Kathryn. Her screaming and insulting everyone is awful to watch. I know the show producers like the drama she drums up, but I like it better without her.

Anonymous wrote:Pretty boring episode. Didn't realize Kathryn was in rehab. Thought it was crazy that the kids were living in a separate house from him! Didn't notice that about Patricia. I didn't realize it had been 3 years since Craig graduated from law school. Have I been watching the show for that long?! Shep's observations on Craig showed some insight. He is not a southerner but from Maryland. He came down and tried to be a well to do southerner when that's not how he grew up...

Craig is from Delaware, not Maryland.

Neither state is really Yankee territory. When I (from Maryland) was in college in NC, I had to go with saying I was from "the Mid-Atlantic" rather than from "up North"!

Delaware, Maryland; they are both north of the Mason-Dixon line and did not secede.

Maryland was south of the Mason Dixon line

This. Dummies.

We do this every 3 months but a geographic location doesn't make something culturally southern. See: Florida. Maryland is maybe in the historically drawn south, it's not southern.

But Maryland is not "culturally northern" either. Hence my awkward-but-more-accurate "I'm from the Mid-Atlantic region" statement.

Why didn't you just say, "I'm from Maryland"?

That came first. The second response was to, "Oh, you're a Northerner!"

It's the north in my book.

So, we've got Austen now? Is he yet another man who won't grow up?

Would you two start another thread and quit derailing this one!

It is all related to the "Craig is from Delaware but trying to pretend he's Southern" aspect of the storyline.

No offense, but it is technically "north," if you were in a state any further south. I'm guessing you were met with blank stares after delivering your Mid-Atlantic spiel.

Yes, but he does have a job peddling beer.

Nope. Good humor and smiles all around.

Loosen up.

No. They two of you fighting over if MD/DE is part of the south is not part of his storyline. You can debate about him being a poser but give it a rest about the geography discussion.

I'm excited about the new season. Looks like it's going to be bumpy!
