Private & Independent Schools
Sorry your kid had to settle for Holy Cross. It's ok...some girls get into top universities, but it is rare by comparison. SR is rigorous...the girls are not spoiled. |
| sure |
My kid goes to SR and that's how I know. When people say it's rigorous they mean it's more rigorous than public school. It's not rigorous by any means unless you were there in middle school. |
+1 I'm a SR mom and I hear multiple girls say the campus is small. |
| Is the middle school more rigorous than the upper school? |
Yes more classes per day and hardly any free time |
I don't think you understand the meaning of rigorous. In my experience, middle school students who stayed for HS aren't keeping up with students new to SR. That tells me that the middle school is lame. A lot of those girls aren't in the most challenging classes. |

In DD’s year (she’s now in college), there was a group of very bright girls in MS who stayed for US. They were at the top of the class in both divisions. There were girls who came in K and stayed until 12th, with a couple exceptions these girls were toward the bottom of the class in terms of rigor and college acceptances. The girls who came in US tended to be at the top or middle of the class academically. Obviously I’m making generalizations, but I think that describes the make up of DDs class pretty well.
In terms of rigor—there was plenty of it in US for girls who needed a challenge and expectations were high across the board. That said, the block schedule gave DD flexibility during the week regarding how to tackle HW. She very much appreciated that because she played a sport and by the time she got the college she was used to the not every day class schedule. |

Not rigorous? You’re trolling. The work isn’t insanely difficult, but there is alot of it and the standards are high.
We’ve not attended Sidwell or NCS, so I can’t speak in comparisons but I know that THAT level of stress and “rigor” isn’t what we wanted for our daughter and it isn’t what she wanted either. We specifically chose StoneRidge because it wasn’t as rigorous as those other schools. Newsflash.. not everyone is seeking that and there are levels to rigorous. Our daughter is working harder than she ever has, but classmates always offer to help one another. They call each other to talk through tough assignments and if they see someone struggling, offer to tutor each other. Your upper schooler will have homework everyday and assessments every week, but she’ll love her teachers and the school environment. So tired of the nasty comments on this forum. Do you even attend this school? |
My guess is half the people on this thread know absolutely nothing about SR the way they're talking. |
K-12 lifer here. Not from this area but went to a well known private growing up. It was a known fact that those that were granted admission in 9th grade ran academic circles around us “lifers.” So much so that we actively joked about it while in upper school. We still joke about it as alumni. It is reasonable to infer that a student who successfully navigates the competitive admissions process for entry at the 9th-grade level may demonstrate a greater tolerance for sustained academic rigor than a student admitted in kindergarten, who, while intelligent, did not undergo the same level of evaluative scrutiny. |
This is what we are experiencing at SR and it makes total sense. Nobody is going to know if a 5 year old student is going to have the intelligence or drive to excel with a rigorous course load in high school. Some will, but the student body in high school is going to have some who don't, and those are typically students who came up through the middle school. |
| Former LS now MS parent here - our family was of the understanding that if our daughter could not keep up in MS, she would be counseled out before US. Is this what happens? Or, are they keeping girls on who cannot keep up academically just because they started in K/Pre-K? |
I hope you can see that you are not representing the school or its community in a good light with this elitist, stuck-up ass comment... |
