Since the city drove out rent controlled residents in favor of over market rate voucher residents, I am no longer interested in placing affordable housing OR low-income housing in these new developments in prime real estate areas. Clearly the city isn't interested in a middle swath for workers, retirees, single parents etc since they have had it all up our major cooridors, and are destroying it. |
Is there a current shortage of housing in DC? If so, what kind are we short on? And how would this development address that? The shortage people face seems to be SFH with room to grow a family, but wouldn't these be more apartments for singles? I don't see any shortage there. |
DC law only requires about half of the affordable housing (IZ) that Montgomery County, MD requires in new development. Bowser and her pals in the development industry always intone affordable affordable to bolster their 'build, baby, build!" agenda, but clearly they are not serious about affordable housing. |

There are currently almost 3000 properties for sale in DC proper alone. Plus all the rental properties. There is no housing shortage. Now, can everyone afford to own in Cleveland Park or Chevy Chase? Of course not. They’re just going to have to work harder and save or change their expectations. Many of us lived in the suburbs and commuted in by transit in our 20s and early 30s to be able to afford to live in nice DC neighborhoods. All these 20 something ANC commissioners who are just out of college with a worthless humanities degree somehow think there is a problem because they cannot afford to buy in CP. Tough luck. Put the time in and pay your dues and move to North Bethesda for a few years. There are no participation trophies in the real estate game. |
