Teachers Resigning Like Crazy?

LOL...ok troll

Very few vacancies? FCPS had tons of vacancies. They are just dividing up classes for larger sizes, using long-term subs, resident teachers, putting teachers on overload salaries. They can't leave a classroom empty with no children, but there are a ton of piecemeal solutions right now which are putting strain on everyone.

Yup moved back here and put my resume in had 25 principals contact me in one week....reality is they were scrambling to fill positions and we are still understaffed at the school I'm at.

Same thing with me over the summer. Created an account online and don’t apply for any jobs - just created the account. 12+ emails and 8 phone calls in less than 24 hours.

This. We couldn’t staff two classroom positions so the other classes in those grades absorbed the students from the planned classes (after the start of the school year). A third had a long-term sub for the entire first quarter. We have two sped assistant jobs currently unfilled because they quit mid year with vague excuses but it was really about the physical assaults they were taking from their students.

Teaching residents aren’t going to fix this staffing problem. Not even close.

DP. I was a long-term sub until I realized admin actually had no plans to hire a full-time teacher. I decided I wasn't going to do all a teacher has to do (grading, planning, take-home work) without the pay, so I left. They will get by with long-term subs as long as they can because they're cheaper. It's awful.

These claims are now made every year to the point where it’s like crying wolf.

+1 have yet to see it. Our school has a full staff and has zero issues getting long term subs even for all the pregnant teachers (there are quite a few!). We have had 2-5 pregnant teachers every year for the last 5 years.

Those annoying pregnant teachers

Our kid’s teacher is going out on maternity leave in a few weeks and so far there is no long term sub.

My principal told me I was responsible for finding a sub when I went out. How? When? When I went out on maternity leave 8 weeks early due to a premie there was no one. The FCPS staff Facebook page is full of people asking for long term subs. No one wants to do 90% of the teaching work for 50% of the pay.

Exactly this.

I recently applied for the FCPS tutor position they've been advertising. However, I noticed in the actual application that tutors will be responsible for creating their own "curriculum"? Wouldn't that be provided by the students' teachers?

I have wondered the same. I’m a current teacher and will be retired after June. I’m thinking I might be willing to do this in the spring and then during the summer and into next year, but I’m also not sure how that would work. If you retire and want to substitute for example, you need a 3 month separation before you can start.

The quality of these hires is going to be….iffy…in my opinion. I hope I’m wrong and desire carries them through the first few years.

Only two out of five of our student teachers even finished the school year last year.

Wait, what? They dropped out? And didn't finish their teaching degree?

They dropped out of student teaching. I assume they switched their major to something else.

Does anyone realize how insane that is? Student teaching is your last semester of college. I'm not even sure they can get their degree if they don't do it.That literally means years more of schooling because they thought teaching was so awful after spending four years preparing to teach.

Probably not. The teachers don’t have the time or energy to do that.

That’s not the case for all teachers. Many teachers have a separate major and still pursue a teaching degree. It is fairly common for HS teachers.

Student teaching wasnt actually required to get my BS in Education— I knew someone who dropped out of student teaching and still graduated. She just wasnt eligible for a teaching certificate. She fixed everything in grad school and is now a psychiatrist.

“Shouldn’t be allowed?” What is that supposed to mean?

Ok... but then how are the tutors supposed to know what the student needs help with?

And then doing what for income?? Waitressing?
going back to school?
They are not qualified for anything else

LOL. Oh, I know you wish so desperately this were the case, but sadly for you, it isn’t.
