Lol I wish our charter would lead the charge and drop it. Lee will be one of the last to drop… ugh

Not just Lee .. many of them will be right there with you having their 10 day quarantines, full school PCRs, cohorting, and masks until at least next fall.

To answer the question .. they CAN but they will not.

This is not true. The rules on masking in schools in DC are from the DC Department of Health. They aren't from the DC PCSB nor are they from individual charter school boards. Charters have to follow the DC Department of Health. Same for DCPS, privates, parochials, etc within DC.

Yes. I didn't mean that charters were free from public health regulations. I meant that charters were not bound to follow DCPS. Right now our charter has quarantine regulations, cohorting, and testing that is not in sync with DC Dept of Health. So, the idea that our school (the only one I know much about) would lead in relaxing guidelines is hard to imagine. Just like last year when DCPS opened months before our school attempted to serve any students, including high risk ones.

Our charter opened for hybrid early at the end of Feb and by end of March every family who wanted hybrid in our grade, and it was overwhelming majority. got hybrid 4 full days a week. The majority of DCPS school around was us were not even close to offering anything like that.

So it sounds like your charter did poorly. Where it sounds like most DCPS schools did poorly compared to ours.

Each school varied even within DCPS.

Masks or no masks. It’s your choice.

I support Biden, but these mandates are going too far.

I’m a parent with a 4th, 6th, and 9th grader and I support our teachers to choose! Good for you all!

Clap Emoji! Same here!

Same here. Although I teach in VA so we will probably be mask free soon. Meanwhile my DCPS kids will still be masking on the playground.

DC teacher here:

Thanks to all of the parents and students for your patience throughout this entire pandemic. It’s not over, but it’s way better than where we were a year ago this time.

Your willingness to work with us is not lost on us. Despite the difference of opinions at times, we are truly grateful to all of you and your children.

Thank you,

Grateful DCPS Teacher

looks like MCPS will vote to drop their mask mandate on March 8: https://mocoshow.com/blog/mcps-board-of-education-to-address-mask-mandate-at-march-8-meeting/

You have experience at one charter and yet that doesn’t stop you from making blanket idiotic statements that are false? You do know that charters are run independently, right? There is also variation between each DCPS, and even more variation among charters.

VA and MD are dropping mask mandates in school. Per CDC guidelines, areas such as DMV, with high vaccinations and low hospitalizations should drop masks.

DC will be pressured to follow soon. Then individual families can decide if they want their kid to wear a mask. Schools with high vaccination rates will likely be majority mask free. Schools with low vaccination rates, I predict many kids in masks. School who don’t even know their vaccination rates, you are working in the dark and don’t understand how families don’t demand to know. Ignorance is not bliss.

Find me in my post a blanket statement, an idiotic statement, or one that if false.

Your reply suggests some strange and deep seeded issues that have nothing to do with this conversation but -- for what its worth -- my work involves fund raising for charter schools so I do know they are independent and quite a bit about how they are run. However, my children attend only one.

I hope this is true. This year has been such a cluster f*ck.

Schools all over the county are mask optional. And vaccine optional. And not different then DC in terms of cases, deaths FROM
covid. It's theatrics. Leave the kids alone.

I teach in NOVA and our kids can go mask free March 1st. I think many will forgo the masks. Which is fine because they are mostly I’ll fitted and cotton. We don’t know the vaccination rates at my school, but I assume pretty low. Most kids I teach haven’t been vaccinated. But they’ve also mostly all had COVID or live in a house with someone who had it. So we are all moving on.

I’m still sort of on the fence about masks inside, but masks outside are absolutely ridiculous at this point. WHY???

NP. Sounds like you are the one who needs to unclench.

All schools need to drop the mask outside now and DC needs to drop the mask mandate in schools in the next 2-3 weeks, shortly after it goes into effect in VA and MD.
