Advanced Academic Programs (AAP)
Hate to break it to you, but we prioritize education in our home countries more so than Americans seem too, and we have low rates of crime in our home countries. There's no assimiliation going on here. We have cram schools at home, and have them here too. |
| Will be interesting to see how HB 127, which would likely invalidate the FCPS School Board's changes to the TJ admissions process, progresses through the Virginia legislature. It's almost a certainty Youngkin would sign it if it gets through the Senate. |

Wow, FCPS is really feeling threatened by HB 127. They have gone on the offensive already:
https://www.fcps.edu/news/see-what-makes-tjhsst-one-highest-rated-high-schools-nation Their argument doesn't even hold water, because TJHSST was rated the #1 school based on the students admitted before the new admissions process was implemented. And I wonder if they even ran this by their counsel, because they seem to concede that HB 127, if enacted, would require a change in the new admissions process, when theoretically they could have argued the provisions of the bill aren't applicable. Words cannot describe how much I despise the a-holes in FCPS and on the School Board by focusing so much on a single school while ignoring the needs of so many other schools and students. We have got to get these fools off the School Board in 2023. |
Neither party "cares about education". They care about winning. Unfortunately, the governance system we have is about picking the lesser of two evils in a given circumstance. I inherently distrust republicans although most of their policies are beneficial to me. However, their trickle down economics and callous disregard of the poor makes me want to vomit. I'm all for raising taxes. I vote Dem even though their raise my taxes, are pro-illegal immigration and pro-wasteful spending. When their policies hit closer to home (e.g. the current school board nonsense with TJ for example), I have to act. I will vote Dem in the national and state elections (as I always have) but will vote to replace this SB when the opportunity arises. I'm under no illusion that the Democrats are my "friends" either. Maybe after Trump is gone and they really become "big-tent", I'll consider supporting them.. |

Regardless of what happens in the TJ litigation, the FCPS materials that have been released by the plaintiffs today reveal a completed dysfunctional School Board sniping with each other and at Brabrand.
If they had a shred of decency, they would all resign tonight. They are completely unfit for office. And the biggest hypocrite is the despicable Karen Corbett Sanders, who tried to hold herself out as committed to equity when all she cared about was getting more kids from her own district into TJ to keep Scott Surovell off her back. Nothing but pork barrel utterly disconnected from who most deserved to attend TJ. |
|
After reading some of the texts between the SB members posted in the TJ information, it is clear that this was all for show. They did not want the changes that were recommended for TJ but voted for them anyway. Accuse other SB members of being racist and lying.
Very troubling. |
Agreed. The TJ process is done and dusted and does not require any more of our or the School Board's attention. It is long past time to leave that issue where it is and move on to more important matters. |
It makes me like Sanders even more. I'm glad she isn't a true believer and I'm happy she ended up pushing for kids she represents (who are massively underrepresented at TJ) to get in. |
This has gotten me over my TDS. You should get over yours, too. I am no longer voting Dem. |
I see what you're trying to do here. Unfortunately, FCPS will be dealing with the ramifications of the new TJ admissions process for years to come. First, they are still tied up in litigation, which could go either way, especially in light of the information obtained by the plaintiffs during discovery and recently made public. Second, for as long as the new admissions process is in place, they will have to spend more resources to vet the admitted students to avoid the potential legal challenges associated with a more subjective "holistic" process. Third, they may well have to do more to assist students who struggle at TJ in the future (or, alternatively, ensure that TJ courses are less demanding). Fourth, they will be confronted by a hostile Youngkin administration, who may seek to undo the admissions changes at the state level if the federal litigation is dismissed. It will never end. For every problem they think they solve, they create two or three more. |
Yes, if you are a believer in a classic spoils system, Karen Corbett Sanders is your gal. I forward to Board members in the future who fight with equally sharp elbows. She may seem like a pitbull when surrounded by wallflowers on the Board but I'd expect some cage fighters to emerge in 2023. |
In my parents home country, the entire “cram school” culture is far beyond the wildest imagination of nearly all Americans who aren’t Asian. |
You definitely sound like a D.
|
|
In reference to cram schools- the ones in the states are like babysitting.
My country cram schools are all the time. Kids don’t get home until 11pm. Americans have no idea how easy they have it here. |

Well, the country I know well and love grounds flights on the make-or-break uni entrance exam day. I heard that police have been known to help out students who are running late!
Uni is a cakewalk compared to HS. |
