How does Thompson Creek compare in price?

Anonymous
We need a door and a few windows replaced. I like the idea of using a local company like Thompson Creek, but am concerned they'll be much more expensive. Before I have the rep out here for a 3 hour sit-down, can anyone tell me if they've used Thompson Creek? How did their price compare with other estimates you received?

TIA!

They're insanely overpriced.

We had them out for a new door...did the whole sit down thing with them while they gave us their sales pitch. Got as far as picking out what door we'd want and everything. Their price was somewhere around $3000 for a new front door and a new storm door. They were the first ones we spoke to so we didn't know how that compared. We said we'd think about it and get back to them. He said that his price was only good if we bought RIGHT THEN. We still waited.

Since we were only in the early stages of considering the door replacement, we didn't really look at much else. We just knew that $3k was too high and we weren't going with them. Over the course of the next two weeks, we got multiple phone calls and emails from the salesman lowering the price. In the end, the last email flat out said "tell me what price this needs to be for us to get this done." He'd already lowered his priced by a grand. We probably could have gotten him lower but at that point, we just said we weren't interested.

We ended up going through Home Depot and getting both doors put in for $1500 or so. Maybe a little less.

My parents got a quote fromt hem for window replacement and they were about double the estimate from the lowest price guy. They ended up going with the company who gave them a middle of the road price.

We had the same exact experience with Empire Carpet. Quoted something ridiculous and when you waffle, they keep lowering their price until you agree to buy. We bailed on them too and got our carpet through a local carpet store. Much better quality carpet for less money.

OP here. Thanks for the information. That's what I suspected. We had the same experience with Long. Don't want to go through all of that again (3 hours of door sales pitch and window greatness) just to find out that they are as overpriced as Long.

Home Depot isn't a bad option. I wonder if they could do windows properly.

I always wonder who actually goes with these guys! Their prices are OUTRAGEOUS and their sales techniques are awful. High pressure sales? NO THANK YOU. I wanted to throw these guys out of my house.

We ended up getting windows fro Nova Installations ( a TRULY local company) and they were half the price as Thompson Creek and were great to work with. No pressure, no bullshit, a fair price was the only price and the first price.

Do they work in MoCo also? I need a window replacement.

Maybe. They came to my second home 2hrs away to do windows there too.

Ic an't say enough good things about them. No BS.

Thompson Creek might have the most amazing windows east of the Pacific Ocean, and I still wouldn't buy them given their approach to sales. Don't waste your time. I know one person who's used them: my elderly neighbor who I can only imagine was pressured into buying the windows on the spot.

We talked with Nova Installations when we replaced our windows and ended up going with Windows on Washington. Nova Installations looked great, but person references from co-workers leaned us towards Windows on Washington. Probably wouldn't go wrong with either provider ...

I could go into lots of details about really bad customer service, promising to do lead abatement procedures - and not doing them (allowing paint chips to fall all over the yard and into our strawberry patch and herb garden), measuring half of the windows incorrectly and having to push the installation into my renter's lease period and having one of the windows break within the first 2 months of installation, but it would really just upset me all over again. And this was 5 years ago.

But they did give us the best price. I ignored the high pressure tactics and said I wouldn't sign anything when they came. I got estimates from three companies. TC and another Falls Church City company came in at pretty comparable levels, the third one was much lower, which always makes me nervous. I kept bouncing the two estimates against each other until both companies gave me their final offer. This final cost was about 25% less than their original estimates.

Never be bullied into high pressure sales tactics. Walk away. Unless you are truly under the gun - like your roof was blown away and so was all of your neighbors - you are in control. Make up your mind on your own time frame and ALWAYS bounce proposals off competitors.

With all that said, I wish I had gone with the FCC company. They were really nice people.

Thompson creek is really, really, really expensive. I suspect their windows are among the highest quality, but their sales tactics are really quite rude. I personally believe if you have a great product and a fair price, you shouldn't need high pressure sales as part of your business model.

I had a similar experience with Thompson Creek when I replaced my windows and doors in a townhouse several years ago. High pressure tactics, ridiculous prices and then when I moved on, they came back to me with yet another TODAY ONLY special. I felt like I was dealing with a used car salesman in a bad B movie. Find a local contractor and have them help you select windows. DO NOT DEAL WITH THOMPSON CREEK. You will pay too much for a product you can get almost anywhere else, including Home Depot.

OH GOD NO
DO NOT CALL THEM

They will come to your house. They were at my house for 3 hours and wouldn't leave. These guys give corner used car lots a good name. Seriously, not exaggerating, DO NOT call them. Your time would be better spent buying an urn because you'll wish you were dead halfway through their sales pitch.

What are they saying for three hours? How much can there possibly be to say about this topic??

They come to your house, introduce themselves, do some rudimentary talk for about 30 minutes where it's a bunch of pleasantries about windows. Then they bring out the props. Pamphlets, brochures, small simple windows with lights that they shine through. Then they sine the light through your window to show you how much better their inert gas is than your current vacuum glass. When you finally get sick of the dog and pony show, they move onto the price. They write a number down, tell you this is what it costs. Then try to convince you to buy more for deals. When you spit milk out of your nose in reaction to the price, they slash through that number and write a new number TODAY ONLY!!!!! They continue doing this with various limited discounts over and over again. There is acting involved where they pretend you're taking food off their kid's table and the sort. If you've ever experienced high pressure sales as car lots, timeshares, etc, take all your experiences, put them together and multiply it by 10 and you have the experience we had.

I don't buy from anyone who has constant commercials on talk radio, so that includes various gold companies, Thompson Creek, Nu Look Home Design roofing, etc.

Talk radio listener and I clench my jaw whenever I hear, "I'm Patrickfinglenulookhomedesign..." (is he drunk?)

Worst ads ever! Just for fun looked up yelp ratings and online reviews and Nu Look heavily criticized for high pressure sales tactics.
