Given that some people have said a good charter seat is worth $100k to them, I think it's far to say this is a great benefit for underpaid teachers.
I just hope that charters don't use this carrot to further depress their wages. |

Having been shut out of the charters I loved for three years in a row, I still feel great about preferences for staff. I would rather have a teacher who is committed and invested in one school, as a teacher and as a parent, than a teacher who is trying to be in two places at once. I feel similarly about non-education staff.
I also hope that the preference is not used as a benefit to replace other benefits or dollar figures. |

Agreed that teachers deserve this perk, but this also includes staff, like administrators, doesn't it?
That's my biggest What's to prevent a SAHM from taking a $10k a year PT office job at the school in order to gain admission. (I almost have myself talked into trying to get one of these jobs next year!) As I remember this is limited to no more than 10% of the student body, but that's still potentially a lot kids. |
I think that's a great idea, actually. I think it would be a very positive experience for a SAHM to re-enter the workforce via a school she would likely be heavily involved with anyway. I think that provides great stability to the children of the school and that the only people who would not benefit from this are people on the waitlist who feel like they are more deserving of the spot than someone who works for the school for any amount of money. |
You have to be a FT staff member. |
| I am happy they have preference.. absolutely deserved. I don't know why DCPS teachers and administrators do not get preferences as well- to DCPS schools. For the same reasons others listed, I think its great for a small percentage to be available for preference. Want to retain top talent and teachers? Give them these small perks. |
| I just wish they would release more lottery data so that everyone could understand how things like "staff preference" came into play. It's important to know if there were a lot of IB w/sibling applicants who were waitlisted, for example. Unless My School DC lets everyone see how all the various preferences came into play how do you trust it? Or anticipate it's impact on your lottery chances next year? |
What were your top choices PP? Where are you going to end up? Moving? |
My kid has sibling preference at a bilingual and was waitlisted. |
There's no such thing as "in boundary" for a charter school. |
Okay. Former McKinsey & MBA here but also SAHM. I'll go back to work in the office for $30k a year in exchange for seats for my kids. Fair deal for all? |
| We are at a HRCS. Not many parents at our school. Maybe 2 with school age kids. |
| Just curious - do the staff/teachers have to stay employed to keep their child's slot. That's a long time at some of the schools that start at PK3. |
Who cares if you used to grind away at a consulting job or that you have an MBA? It makes it seem like you're defensive about being a SAHP or that you feel the school job is beneath you. Maybe that's not what you meant, but that's how it sounds. |
Inspired Teaching and Creative Minds. Also Stokes. We're at a not highly regarded DCPS in our neighborhood (not actually our IB, which we didn't get into either). DD is starting K next year and we are happy to stay put. I have friends at CMI and ITS and they are happy there too. There is life beyond HRCS. |
