Diverse public middle school that would make a white student comfortable?

Anonymous
Moving to DC. We love diversity but I do want to make sure my kids feel comfortable in their school and surroundings. Any experience at Deal, Latin and Basis? I don't care about the diversity numbers as long as my kids will feel welcome and comfortable. By the way, this is a legit concern and I'm not trying to start a firestorm.

Good luck with that on this site.

Latin is your place.

Deal, Latin or Basis. I would avoid Hardy.

Charters are hard to get into--by lottery. But basis may be ok depending on what grade.

Hardy, Deal and Stuart Hobson are the neighborhood middle schools with a diverse student body. If you move inboundary for one of these schools you are. Guaranteed a spot.

Where are you moving from?

You've heard from Deal and Latin, I'll echo the same for BASIS - very diverse, good mix of kids from all wards and demographics, and there don't seem to be any tensions or issues, we have no concerns about it. They try to instill a "its cool to be smart" culture and it probably even has less of the cliquey feel to it than some of the far more homogenous mostly-white schools that I went to growing up.

Another vote for BASIS. But keep in mind, OP, that you can only get it for 5th and 6th. There's no way to get in for 7th and higher.

You'd absolutely be guaranteed a spot at Hardy because virtually all the families in its neighborhood tend to avoid it. The last published data indicated that only 13% of its students live in the school's boundary area -- Hardly a ringing vote of confidence in Hardy.

Doesn't Stuart Hobson have a similar percentage OOB?

Until the Basis boosters take over the board, I'll quickly put in a good word for Stuart Hobson. We've been very happy with the school over the years. I know there's a lot of haters on this board, but we've been very happy with the education our kids have received. My older kids and their classmates end up at great HS (Gonzaga, Walls, Banneker, Wilson) holding their own, and excelling. For college they're at Wisconsin, Clemson, UC Boulder, UVA, Tufts, UVM, UDel, UNC and more. Sure there's a slightly rougher group of kids every year, but I do think the admins have a handle on it and my kids love the diversity and have fun with all the kids, not a problem. I think the school gets stronger every year.

That was seriously the best snark you could come up with? Not worth it.
