I don't care about the diversity numbers as long as my kids will feel welcome and comfortable. By the way, this is a legit concern and I'm not trying to start a firestorm.

Where are you moving from?

No middle school. Gonzaga starts at 9th.

OP, my kids go to a diverse school and they are not "comfortable." That's kind of the point of true diversity. That perfect mix of racial and socioeconomc backgrounds doesn't make everyone blind to those issues, it makes them confront them, sometimes in a painful way. Why do you want diversity if everyone's going to pretend they are all the same anyway? Or let the white kids feel "comfortable" while the token "diverse" students remain uncomfortable?

+1 PP. That said the shifts at Deal and Wilson have made believe that white even if they claim to be liberal don't really want to confront systemic inequality. They just want brownie point for sending their kids to "urban" schools.

DCI is the most diverse middle school in the city. Seriously. Both economically and racially/culturally. No hubris here. Must say, though, your subject line made me uncomfortable. What exactly were you getting at with the "white student" part???

Very well said.

OP, what grades will your children be entering in August 2015? That makes a big difference in DC. Statistically it is impossible for your child to enter Latin in the sixth grade. Basis only accepts fifth and sixth graders. DCI will have some spots for sixth and seventh grade, but you must play the lottery. You have to live in-bounds for Deal. I don't know the racial break-down for McKinley MS, but I see white, Hispanic and black children walking from the school (school uniform) to the subway everyday. The majority are Black.

Although the District is no longer majority Black, the school system does not reflect how diverse the city has become. White people are continuing to send their children to Deal or private in great numbers.

OP has not returned to thread nor has stated where she/he is moving from. Methinks this is a pot stirring troll.

Is this some kind of research for a college studies paper. What is the difference in answers you get on the "Diverse public middle school that would make a black student comfortable?" and "Diverse public middle school that would make a white student comfortable?" threads?

Give it a rest.

There aren't 300 Asian kids in all of DC.

OP: I didn't mean to make people uncomfortable but I truly wanted to know if my own kid who is coming from a less diverse school would be accepted and feel comfortable at Deal. I want her to have friends and be happy. Our choices are private or Deal now that we are renting a house in bounds. I would prefer to go public but this is our first city school and are new to this type of large, diverse school. We currently attend public at a middle school that is about 300/350 kids. I also wanted to make sure she would be challenged at Deal but people seem to think its a good school academically.

You are either a troll or a racist. I'm thinking troll--"not trying to start a firestorm"? Why not bring up circumcision and formula feeding while you're at it...

Hell, my child attends a majority all black high-school his teachers are are all white, his assistant principal is white and his best friend is the lone white child at the school and he is comfortable.

Why is this racist when parents of AA kids ask all the time on these forums whether or not there is enough diversity in a certain (usually private) school to make their DC comfortable? Certainly, that's not racist. So, why is this parent of a child asking the same question racist?
