UW-Madison is in the lead right now for DC's college choice, but she's kind of terrified for the winters. How much of a factor should this play?!

You get used to it. The first year will suck though. And then you bundle up, marvel at how fast the roads are cleared and life goes on, and you get on with your day. |
I went to college in Minnesota (coming from this area), it was fine. |
I went to school in Vermont.
You get used to it. |
I went to UW-Madison and I'm not going to lie, winters can be brutal. The good news is that they know how to deal with the snow. It gets VERY cold but you get used to it, and you learn how to dress for it.
Madison is a GREAT town, any season other than winter is gorgeous, and the famers market is by far the best I've seen anywhere ![]() |
+ 1 from another Madison grad. And, fwiw, I never hated winters as much in Madison as I so in DC. I think it's because they know how to manage them there, and people adapt and don'tet the weather stop them from doing things for 4 months each year like they do here! |
Yes! We toured campus in February (10 degrees...) and there were tons of people out and about, ice skating on the lake, etc. |
I went to school in CT and honestly if I had to do it over again I would go someplace warmer |
Another UW grad. Madison is so great even despite the weather. Make sure she has the right clothes and boots though! |
I grew up in AZ and stayed for college because I was scared of the cold. |
I'm not gonna lie, I didn't realize how much weather had an impact on if I attended class.
When your in college, your motivation to attend class many times can already be low (esp at a big state school). Cold weather absolutely kills that motivation and makes you say 'fuck it' when you are warm and decide it isn't worth getting bundled up to trudge through snow for it. |
To quote someone else:
"Go South and West" |
Most get used to it and find joy and beauty in it. You buy good winter wear and live in boots.(don't buy clothes without advice because you have no idea). I would live somewhere like that again in a minute. I loved the lakes in the winter.
However, some really can't stand it and leave. |
I went to school in upstate NY and agree with the posters who say most students adapt. At the same time, a few people just never get used to the cold and hate being someplace with snow 30% of their academic year. I personally didn't let it stop me from a great college experience. I attended Cornell, which is in upstate NY (lots of cold and snow there). |
I went to school in New England coming from DC. I did not get used to it, and I didn't get used to the fact that it would get cold there the second week in Seprember and not warm up until we were ready to leave for the summer. I wouldn't have chosen a differet school just because of the weather, but I didn't like all of the snow. |
