The mother of two of the victims reported to the Post that she was warned by a neighbor that there had been a previous claim of sexual abuse against this man.

And yet she chose to leave her daughter and son alone with him while she took a nap and her husband went shopping.

Read:

"The mother also told detectives that in June, a month before her children came forward, a neighbor had warned her that a girl around her daughter’s age had reported Mahony for sexual abuse in 2023. The mother said she discussed the allegations with her husband. Her husband told detectives that they had decided to give Mahony the “benefit of the doubt.” "

This is not normal behavior.

I can't get past this. WTF??!!

I wish I hadn’t read the WaPo article with the mother saying she walked in on her child with the man, and was so shocked she just shut the door and went back to the living room. holy $hit. She just left her kid in there. I’m speechless.

I'm not one of those "it could never happen to me" parents or someone who envisions going full mixed martial arts specialist on every mugger, but I truly cannot envision seeing my child being abused and not going totally feral. Calmly shutting the door and going back into the living room for a sip of my G+T would not be on the menu.

Ditto. I’d be like one of those Texas dads who walked into seeing their child being raped and manslaughtererd the rapist on the spot. I’d likely tear his testicles and penis from his body with my bare freaking hands. And hopefully the local prosecutor would be mindful of her reelection prospects and would give me a pass on charges.

Yep. I've honestly freaked out and defended my dog being attacked more vociferously than this mother did her child. Then again, they knew about accusations of abuse and gave "the benefit of the doubt" to allow this man unfettered access to their kids, so mom seems a little...special.

I’ve mentioned it before but she was trying to renew her visa when he was arrested. It has since expired so she has to leave the country. I agree that right now, she needs to do what’s best for her kids even if that’s leaving her husband and moving back to their home country.

I thought something was happening to my DD when she was 3 with some older boys and I literally impulsively just went ballistic. It’s like a reflex, you just act. I have no regrets about making a scene, grabbing my DD and yelling like crazy. None. I cannot understand any parent that just walks away. WTAF

Flight or fight response. The mother’s response is obviously flight. She may have even been abused herself in the past and thus flight would be the natural response. Most people don’t naturally fight or intervene in an incident.

I posted this before but it got deleted....I'll try to reword it.

The victim's last name is very obviously from a European country (I don't want to get specific bc my comment got deleted last time).

I'm wondering if the way the victim's mom handled it was a result of her being foreign, it being a cultural thing in their country (ex: not believing a child's word over an adult's word), or a combination of both.

Mahony’s wife might’ve known his arrest was coming. The police probably came by their place to ask them questions. She still took her son to PVS champs on July 20 with ASA. Thomas was arrested a few days after the ASA meet. If you look at the dates, Thomas’s wife didn’t leave didn’t leave the country immediately because she was the parent that probably took her son to the MVP dolphins meet a few days after Thomas’s arrest.

Why? What on earth would they say? They don’t background check entire families before allowing Swimmers into the program. They have no culpability so why would they comment?

The club could have said that it was deeply saddened to learn about the allegations and has zero tolerance for sexual exploitation. They could have also pointed out that the club has taken a number of steps to keeps its swimmers safe such as becoming safesport recognized, not letting parents or other spectators into practice facilities or locker rooms, etc.

Disagree. As a parent, those sentiments and ideas are either already known or unnecessary. Does any organization tolerate any level of sexual exploitation? We get all the safesport notifications (and all watched videos that helped get the certification) and we know the policies on viewing practice and bring on deck from other communications. And saying they are deeply saddened is assumed.

Happy ASA parent here. We aren’t leaving ASA. Respectfully, if the 4th victim ends up being an ASA swimmer (I hope it’s not), do you think ASA should refrain from sending something out about being deeply saddened that someone from the ASA community was harmed by this criminal? I think ASA should. By your logic, ASA should not show any empathy.

What school did this guy’s kids go to in DC? Hello?! Why hasn’t anyone asked this yet!

Good question. The Washington Post articles does not say the school.

It hasn’t come up here, but the school community knows.

I can. Some people have the opposite reaction and get all paralyzed. I can see myself paralyzed for a minute, not believing my own eyes, and then robotically walking up to my child, taking her by the hand and walking out the door (and grabbing my other kid). I don't think I would have been able to speak at all.

But you would have gotten your child out of there. This woman just left her there.

I did not know this about the victim, but I did wonder if they were foreigners who did not have the same background knowledge of child abuse prevention that the American middle class is constantly talking about. I am French. In France recently, there have been massive cases of child abuse that have been prosecuted, or have come to light. The cases date from decades ago, but it's only now that victims dared to speak up. There is still relatively little training about what to look for if you're the average parent - it's still all hush-hush and taboo. The US is very much at the forefront of talking about abuse in all its forms compared to the rest of the world.

4000 Mass would be in bounds for Eaton, without any other knowledge of whether they were there or elsewhere.
