Most people understand people were making tough decisions with limited knowledge in an unprecedented situation during Covid. As a parent at that time I didn't want my kids going to school, getting Covid, bringing it back home to more vulnerable family members etc. It was a scary time that was disruptive whether schools were virtual or in person. Most of us know people who died and even more who were hospitalized. I don't blame any school board member for that--and I imagine many others feel the same.

I preferred McLaughlin, but I don't see Sizemore Heizer through the same lens as you.

That’s not true. Or, it’s a significant re-write of history. When parents were given an option in summer. 2020 between virtual and in person for 2020-2021, a significant majority chose in person. And people who wanted more caution in fall 2020 were over it by spring when FCPS failed again and again to reopen because (in one instance), they couldn’t figure out lunch logistics. FCPS was one of the last school districts to reopen. And they would not have in Spring 2021 if the State Senate hadn’t voted almost unanimously to make them. And even then, any teacher with with any medical condition, including a BMI of 26, didn’t have to come back, and we got Monitors and virtual learning for kids in school. Even though they were first in line for vaccines and had the option to be fully vaccines when they returned.

Heck, Youngkin won BA based label on suburban moms pissed about the failure to schools to reopen. Without that (and McAwful being a crap candidate), he never would ha won.

Crazy was teachers standing outside school board meetings carrying small coffins.

Repeat this to yourself as needed: You have no entitlement to dictate the health risks for other people. None. ZERO.

I'm not a teacher. But I've been in the schools a lot in various capacities. And those places, esp the lunch rooms in our HS, are petri dishes in GOOD years. If they did not want that exposure for themselves, or to bring home to vulnerable family members, that is their right. And you should have absolutely ZERO say in that.

Mic drop.

Nope, if you have an issue with germ exposure, maybe don't choose a job that exposes you to 100s of other people daily.

You sound like my retired parents who go on and on about the book banning they see on the news. This is such a non issue for my kids. I can’t remember the last time they took out a book from the school library (high school and middle schoolers) or possibly even went into a school library. We are thinking of ordering some of these books as presents for my parents for Christmas, so they can have a copy of the books they are so upset over possibly being banned.

Oh you are one of those people who had breakfast and, because of that, think there are no starving people in the world. . . . it IS a problem

But not a large problem if most students aren't even using the library. Not a daily problem. There are bigger issues in FCPS is all. This isn't something that people should be aligning their vote on either republican or democrat.

Book banning is the work of authoritarian regimes and a number of republican school board candidates made it part of their campaign platform. Yes, I will align my vote with candidates who aren't banning books and will oppose those candidates who spew hate against our trans and LGBTQ students.

DP. Making sure libraries carry age-appropriate books is in no way "banning" books. And please list examples of "spewing hate against our trans and LGBTQ students." You - or another poster - has made this idiotic claim repeatedly, yet refuse to provide any examples. Huh, I wonder why?

People have--read the thread.

You do realize that your health at 25 when you start your job as a teacher is not going to be the same at 55?

During the COVID remote learning year, DD had really wonderful teachers. One was near retirement. The other had nearly died of health complications the previous year. If they didn’t want to come in to work, I would absolutely understand why.

One of the things I don’t really understand is y’all screaming about teacher retention on the one hand, and crapping on the teachers on the other.

It is truly astonishing, isn’t it? They screamed “OMG TEACHERS ARE HORRIBLE SELFISH TERRORISTS — oh, and I can’t *wait* to drop my kids off into their care for 6+ hours a day.”

If both things are true, then that makes them terrible parents. Shrug.

They have no idea what is actually in which book. They haven’t read them. They just parrot RWNJ propaganda.

+1. How come teachers were the only essential workers who could make this call for themselves. Doctors, nurses, my sister the pharmacist, sanitation’s workers, firefighters, even shelf stockers and Wegmans could unilaterally opt out of showing up and being exposed, if they wanted to keep their jobs. So what makes teachers different? And don’t say because they could do their jobs virtually. Because the level of learning loss we are looking at makes it clear they could not— at least not effectively.

Tough sh--. Neither you nor anyone else get to make that call for them. Or that they have to "choose a different job."
YOU choose a different way to school your child. YOu had options. Did not do so? That's on YOU.

PS- my kid has ZERO learning loss. If you worked a bit harder on your end, maybe yours wouldn't either. Again, that's all YOU.

+1. But now be prepared for imbeciles to tell you your kids MUST have learning loss and you as their parent don’t see it, because it can’t work for any kid and it’s toooooo harrrrrrrd.

Your overwhelming support those books is a little bizarre. It was a stupid argument on the right to bring up, but equally stupid of the left to meet their fire. They were comic books with pictures of adults doing sex acts with minors. If that's how you want to focus your energy as to what the school board should focus on when kids don't even go to the library or usually read these books, then don't expect other actual work that matters to academics to get done. Just like the dyslexic kid's issue with getting all the language arts teaching plus dyslexia fit into a school day, the school board can only focus on so many things.

The people choosing books for libraries are librarians, not SB members. The people getting their panties in a bunch over whatever they perceive as inappropriate, are all right wingers. Everything was fine, until these people started making a fuss over books that kids likely wouldn't have even heard of, if they hadn't brought them up. The people wasting everyone's time, is those people making a fuss over books and expecting that they be banned.

Personally, I do not ban books for my child. She is free to read whatever she wants. If you don't want your kid to read something, take it up with your kid. I'm not about to tell you that you shouldn't do that. It's not something that the SB's time should be wasted on. Therefore, when someone running for the SB makes it just about the entirety of their platform, it's not someone I take seriously, or want anywhere near a SB. If they're wasting everyone's time as a non-SB member, I can only imagine how much more they would, if they're on a SB.

So school porn is good as long as it's stealth porn kept on the down low.

The point of my post was that it makes no sense to put someone on the SB who is running on a platform of book banning, because they will take up the SB's time on the issue, instead of addressing matters of considerably higher importance.

Agreed. It's a dumb issue to focus on unless these are required reading books in classes.

Except it’s not a dumb issue to focus on, because the point was to rile up their dumb, scared voter base.

Not to mention there is a long-standing community review process in place for anyone who has a problem with any book in the library. No need to grandstand and make it a big deal if you think it should be addressed. It shows that these are people who are not serious about governing.

Curious. Did this issue start with this process and they were denied any change or was it grandstanding to begin with? I guess either way, the way to fix an issue like this if you don't like the outcome is to run an opponent who will give you a different response. But did they start with any legitimate channels or just blow up this issue out of proportion?

Imagine if the committee that governs this process was dominated by left wing types. Oh wait, it is. This is why these disturbing GRAPHIC books are in the libraries.

The 65% liberal county is telling the other 35% to go pound sand. And many conservatives are departing because of this. Can you blame them?

Bye!

They’re going to get riled up over whatever lies the Republicans dish out. Should Ds ignore? Try to pull something similar? Maybe it’s time to go low.

^ because, as this thread demonstrates, they are aggressively resistant to facts and logic
