Yes, I wrote to the school board & the superintendent. And responded on ThoughtExchange.

So people can go on an actual vacation and still see family for Christmas.

Some of us can’t take a vacation and piecing together childcare is $$$$.

Finding childcare for a contiguous two weeks is easier than for random days scattered throughout the school year. Days off need to be clumped to create actual long weekends, longer holiday breaks or a longer summer.

Unfortunately that’s not how religious holidays work.

Why? What do you use for childcare? All of the Kindercare type of places cover thr days off. All of the Tae Kwon Do after school program type of places cover the extra days off. Are you hiring babysitters for the days off, and they are only willing to book with you for a long week rather than a random day?

Not PP, but I’m guessing PP means something like camps. There are always more options for camps during the longer breaks. One random Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday? Maybe not, especially if you typically use extended day for childcare during the school year.

Extended day care covers the random school days off. I'm not really seeing thr childcare issue here.

This is wrong. It doesn't in Arlington. Which you would know if your children were in Arlington.

It does in Fairfax.

I had no idea that Arlington leaves you in the lurch. We get coverage here in Prince William.

There's a new APS proposal that they will also close Extended Day on early release days. Right now they close early, but APS is proposing not to provide any coverage on early release days. It's insane.

Seriously?!? Where is this. Early release days are one of the main reasons we pay for extended day.

This is the first I’ve heard of this. Where can we find this proposal to not offer extended day on early release days?

In contrast, Fairfax and PWC even offer coverage on days where schools are otherwise closed . If APS wants a calendar that looks like theirs, then we need to offer parents similar coverage. Otherwise we should be following falls church’s lead and nixing all the extra religious days.

This person might be confusing what they recently announced which is if there is a weather related closure where kids are sent home from school early (rarely happens), extended day will not take kids. They will all get sent home early.

That is not the same thing as no extended day on early release days.

You are misrepresenting this. It's what the person above said.

Closings / Delayed Openings35
When Arlington Public Schools schools are closed due to inclement weather, the Program is closed.36
When the schools announce delayed opening, the opening of the Program is delayed the same37
amount of time. When schools close early, the Program is closed.

When the entire school system closes early due to weather, extended day will close.

Early release days are not closed or delayed openings and APS is not closed on early release days.

We got an email from out school in early August that said the following:

According to the Extended Day Central Office:
On days when school is closed early due to inclement weather the after school Extended Day programs will not be open. Families should identify alternate dismissal plans for their child in ParentVUE.

On regular scheduled early release days, Extended Day will operate from early dismissal until 6pm.

The person above is spreading fake news.

There are two different sentences. It's basic drafting that if they meant the same thing, the sentence wouldn't be repeated. The first sentence is about weather closings. The second sentence addresses early release days.

When Arlington Public Schools schools are closed due to inclement weather, the Program is closed.
When the schools announce delayed opening, the opening of the Program is delayed the same amount of time. When schools close early, the Program is closed.

You are wrong. Take up your parsing of their language with the policy writers. Who cares. They aren't going to close on early release days.
