Proposed APS Calendar Policy

Ugh. This policy would solidify school starting 2 weeks before Labor Day, ending by 19 June. 2 weeks off at Christmas, 1 week Spring Break, and 16 holidays in addition. Not counting teacher workdays/grade preparation days. It's such a disruptive calendar and one that makes it so hard for working families.

I don’t like that they keep shrinking summer break… adding minutes to the school day and days to the school year…. No thanks. It would be nice to coordinate spring break with FCPS and make it one consistent week, not tied to Easter.

I don't care when we start, but I'm so tired of them starting earlier and ending at the same d@mn time.

I know this will never happen but frankly I'd rather have one week at winter break, one week in Feb, and one week in Apr. The fall is super choppy and the spring is a complete slog, there has to be a better way to balance it.

I like the idea of a fixed calendar, especially for spring break.

Starting TWO WEEKS before Labor Day indefinitely sounds horrible though. Maybe one week…

Agree.

This is a strong approach and brings certainty. The constant debate over school calendars is no way to run a school system. Waste of time. Summer break is already too long. Tired of the "working families" trope. Just about everyone works, whether it's over the summer, winter break, etc. We're just moving around when that is, and we need to stop that and just pick a schedule so that we all know what to expect.

Agree that a set calendar is good. Disagree that summer is too long. It isn’t just moving days around; they are adding an extra week of school to get back to 180 days, even though APS meets state requirements via hours.

+1 to the added minutes and shrinking of the summer. I don’t really care about the rest tbh

It’s what’s been done the last 5 years or so

So people can go on an actual vacation and still see family for Christmas.

Basically we are starting 4 eke earlier than 2021 now!

Although that was not a normal year, I don’t understand that a few extra religious holidays need a 4 weeks longer school year?

Most of the states that start 2 weeks before Labor Day, also let out much earlier in June… ?

Also yes, the calendar is disruptive.

+1. 100% agree!

I’d rather have 1 week at Christmas and 1 week in Feb. way too long between Jan-April without a significant break for students and teachers.
