Do you not understand how a thread works? There are "multiple" people posting here, not just the OP, who share some of the OP's sentiments. We are not all racist trolls, either.

I think the poster who shrieks about racists is the most racist one of all. Few if any posters here have mentioned race. We are (or I am, anyway) about personal responsibility. And no, I think neither OP nor I feel any responsibility for the bad behavior of white people, because lord knows that would be a full-time job. That's their parents' lookout. OK, it sounds like we have consensus on personal responsibility. That's why I don't think that rap music or Marion Barry has anything to do with these murders. Three young men did a wicked thing, and they will be held responsible.

From today's Washington Post article on the shootings and the 14 year old suspect in custody:

"Superior Court Judge Elizabeth C. Wingo noted that the youth has nine previous convictions on charges including assault and theft and had been placed in the custody of the Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services six times.

Court officials said the youth had fled from detention at least twice and had walked away without permission from DYRS custody before Tuesday's attack. "

This fourteen year old should have been locked up long ago. Phil Mendelson, the council member in charge of the Council's judiciary committee, and the director of DYRS should be forced to go look the families of those victims in the eye and try to justify their record on coddling juvenile thug criminals.

Exactly! There could be a point made here, but OP is so outraged at "those people" and their hatred of police that she sure isn't making it. Why should anyone else do it for her? Other posters have put forth arguments that are much more valid and coherent, but the OP was just ridiculous.

Well, you and I can agree on this. However, why do you and OP think that Blacks must be responsible for the actions of miscreant Blacks and thus stereotype an entire segment of the population. Is this a double-standard.

This is the real point: Black, white, yellow, brown, or purple, after a certain number of violent crimes, a criminal needs to be locked up for a long, long time to keep the rest of us safe. Nine convictions is over the line, even for a juvenile. This kid never should have been on the street in a position to harm people.

Well, as the city keeps gentrifying, and the multigenerational poor are forced out of the city, it's going to be the suburbs' problem to deal with. And then middle- and upper-class folks of all races and backgrounds living in the city will have the luxury of ignoring the problem.

Both Councilmember Mendelson and DYRS Director Schindler are white. DYRS Director Schindler's resume states that he was a Staff Attorney with the Youth Law Center (YLC), a national public interest civil rights law firm dedicated to protecting the rights of young people in juvenile justice and child welfare systems nationwide, from 1997 to 2005. He previously worked as an Assistant Public Defender in Baltimore’s juvenile court representing children in delinquency proceedings. So his past employment history has focused far more on protecting the rights of juvenile predators than protecting society from them.

I have no idea where Mr. Schindler lives, but Councilmember Mendelson resides in upper northwest DC (I seem to recall hearing McLean Gardens) where he is free to pontificate about his failed liberal theories regarding juvenile justice policy from an ivory tower unlikely to be caught in a hail of gunfire from thugs willing to turn AK47s on a crowd of people in order to avenge a stolen bracelet.

Instead of blaming African Americans, how about blaming ultra-liberals like Mendelson and Schindler, who have failed---miserably---to protect law-abiding citizens of all races ---but particularly minorities---from armed predators. There are no legal consequences in DC for violent juveniles.

Mendelson is running for re-election as councilmember at large. If you want an elected official who actually cares about stopping juveniles from committing violent crimes, don't vote for him.

OP here. Im not racist at all, and Im not going to say I have one black friend or something cliche like that. Well I do have a number of black friends (American, Carribean, African, and a few Europeans of African descent), have lived in various parts of the world, and know people of all races. But I digress..

Mendleson is a huge part of the problem, he stopped the mayor's crime bill from passing, which had strict anti-gang legislation and would have cut down people standing on the corners (loitering and taking up the block) especially in known trouble spots.

I blame people for voting for Marion Barry because he is the worst person you can have to try and highlight your plight and get any attention or resources to your community. No one takes a old drugged out stalker (read his rant in City Paper) who doesn't care about anyone else but himself. He is a caricature of everything that is wrong with DC and he represents the poorest. How are they ever going to get anything in their ward? Yet they continue to vote for him.

Liberal elitism (and I come from a family that is filled with them) to me is a form of subtle racism. It says "these people are too dumb to take care of themselves so we have to do it for them. We have to show them that we care and we give them alms and other handouts". Give me a break. One of my African friends commented how people over there stow away and do anything to come to the USA the land of dreams and promise and provide a better life for their families. WHy do you think Latin Americans ride in the back of a truck for miles? Its the promise that this country offers, and our own citizens don't even care.

I also asked an African AMerican a friend of mine who was born in DC, went to UNC and now lives in Bowie why she doesnt mentor at risk youth, and her response was as callous and unfeeling as you could find.
