Work Clothes For Thin Women

Anonymous
wow, i'm surprised by some of the rude comments on this thread.

anyway, i agree that theory makes great clothes for thin women. i've also recently discovered a brand called sanctuary...they make great khaki pants in all different colors which would work depending on how formal you have you dress for work. nordstrom's carries them. you should check out the sales at the various department stores, like bloomies, nordstroms, neiman, etc....try out different brands b/c they're all cut differently. i've had the most success with theory pants.

OP. Never heard of sanctuary, thanks for the idea.

7:18, 7 lbs. Weaning. I now have smaller boobs and a bigger waistline than in March. Great!

21:48, I maintain that your post is bizarre. Why couldn't someone who travels next month or next year take my tip? Is it strange to ever shop for clothes in "London?" If you don't want to go to those shops, just don't ever go.

14:35 and PPs re: the rudeness: I'm always surprised, no matter how long I've been reading DCUM.

Some people are extremely skinny. I'm not one of them, but I can understand how it might not always be easy to find clothes. There's been a lot of re-sizing in the fashion world lately to make bigger-sized people feel better, and over the years I've become a size 6 in some clothes, or a "small." As a 5'8" 140-lb person, I find it ludicrous that I might be a "small." 5'8" is not small, and I am not small, yet in some things I wear a small. So I can see why someone who is my height and much thinner might have issues finding something to fit. There's not much that's smaller than "small."

(and yeah, I wouldn't mind weighing less or being a bit thinner without having to stop eating, but I don't see the point in bitterness.)

Honestly, what can you find in London that you can't find in Tysons or Mazza?

is this a real question? london is a much much bigger city than dc - there are a ton more clothing options there, esp. for a thin woman.

It was a serious question. It just reminded me of that RHoNJ episode where Theresa went to Milan and all she wanted to do was shop at Chanel. You can find Chanel in NYC - and DC, and LA, and other places.

OH, absolutely nothing! If you want to see all that historical crap, just go down to the DC location of Madam Tussaud's.

I hear you. I'm 5'4 and 105 which is pretty thin but not scary skinny. I am my mother's daughter and have a fast metabolism like her however she's much shorter so petite clothes usually work well for her. I have a really hard time finding clothes because even though I'm thin I'm not a rail and the pants made for stick straight women don't work, neither do any for a pear shape or any rounder shape for that matter. I also have very long legs for my height but long is still a little too long. I'm 26 and want to graduate to a more sophisticated work wardrobe without paying premium every time I want to buy a pair of slacks. In jeans however I've had really great luck with American Rag. They're carried in almost every Macy's and are a perfect fit. They don't make office clothing though... bummer.

Don't be sour about not being a really thin woman. I'd love to have a body like Jessica Biel or for that matter be able to put on weight and not have it go to all the wrong places. I'm such a jelly belly to those of you who have a perfect pear shape.. it's so feminine! Grass definitely is always greener. Our problems could be worse I guess.

Thank you for some helpful advice. I'll ignore the sour grapes : ) I'm 5' 6" and weight 118 lbs. Very slender and very healthy. I've always been this way and I'm now in my early 60's and a career woman. I was teased terribly when I was younger for NOT having curves so I'll ignore the jabs being made nowadays for being thin. Anyway, with clothing sizes changing it is hard to find anything that fits. Most start at size 4, and now days, that just doesn't work. I used to wear a woman's 4 or a junior 7. I now I wear a 0 or 2. Not being a petite just compounds the issue. These sizes are not available in most stores. Occassionally, Nordstroms will have size 2 with a 32 inseam available in slacks.

Theory, Tory Burch, nanette lepore, bcbg, alice + olivia.
Go to the basement in Saks. It is made for rich tiny people! I am 5'11 145 so not scary skinny but pretty thin and all these brands work well for me in 4/6. By that logic you would prob be ok, too.

I am 25 years old, 5'8", 110 lbs. and have been this weight and height since I was in middle school. I am fine with that but, as a mother of two and since I am no longer a teenager or college student, I desire to dress more maturely. As someone said before, sizes have changed and, although my actual size has not changed, my clothing size had changed from 4 to 0. At this point in my life, I can't really even afford Banana Republic prices and really would prefer shopping department store sale prices. Maybe most smaller women shop at the more expensive stores, I dunno....but I'm sure not all of us can afford that luxury. The have spent the last two weeks looking for a woman's Easter dress in size 0 or 2, have literally looked in every store I can afford in a 20 mile radius and have found no size 0 dresses (that aren't Junior's) and less than 10 total size 2 dresses and most of them, I discovered after looking at the inside tag, were petite dresses that had been put in the wrong department. If I had known it would have been so hard, I would have shopped online months ago so I would have had time to send it back. I now understand what larger women were going through a few years ago when plus size clothing was not as accessible as it is today! It's absurd, but fashion always changes and maybe sizes will change back. Who knows...

I had a friend complain about the same for several years. It seems that regular stores get one or two clothing items for the very small sizes like 2 for each style so they sell out quickly and they don't reorder the size for the rest of the season.

I'm reasonably thin (100-105, 5'5) but have also been reasonably post-partum at a much higher weight. I recommend (first) consignment shops -- Inga's, Designer Resale, Secondi are all high-end and can be high-priced but you will find nice things often on sale and they are very fashionable and very easy to size. I've also used Chico's to good effect. I do a lot of draping with scarves and increasingly I use more accessories so that the several nice outfits I have can play "differently" depending on what I've got going on.
